Arrived at noon today. Went to B side: 1 Impala, 2 altimas, 1 Camry, and pretty well loaded with minivans and small/mid SUVs. Lots of Captivas and we chose one of those. No large SUVs or convertibles

I still have my National Executive Elite status (or whatever it's called) for my Sept trip. I will be traveling with 4 adults including myself and a baby who will be in a rear facing car seat. We would highly prefer a minivan or larger SUV...but we could make it work with a full size. My sister and I wouldn't mind sitting in the back seat with the baby.

Question: Should we take a chance and just book a midsize to get to choose from the regular Emerald Aisle AND the Executive Aisle? It seems like there is usually at least 1 or 2 larger vehicles there. If there wasn't a larger vehicle, would an attendant look at me like I had 3 heads if I asked for one? (Yes, I know that if we absolutely need a van or SUV we should reserve that class and not chance it.)

I've used the Emerald Aisle four times for our family trips and I've only "made out" with a higher grade car one time. All of the other times I could have gotten a much cheaper rate at another company for the vehicle we ended up with.

You know I'm a big fan but with the klm code ending we may see less post. I can never understand why I can sometimes get a rate with alamo for half of what national offers. Though I still love being an executive member.

I've had the same thought the last two trips. I love the convenience but wonder if it is worth THAT much more that everyone else. I almost feel like I am paying extra for my own loyalty rather than being a valued customer. Sadly, I travel just infrequently enough that I've earned and lost two "free" days..which really aren't that great a deal anyway because they have never stacked for me with a coupon and the coupon was always better than my alleged reward day. Booked early for this trip with KLM. If it breaks better elsewhere I'll switch.....likely my last National booking either way.

Luckily, have a code that is tied to where I work. And it is usually pretty good.
Sorry, you have lost your "free days". Your right, They don't really save you much.

I started with National, when I was young and trying to rent a car. They never gave the "tough sell" for Insurance. Or, give you the worse car on the lot. Ugh. I really appreciated that, after trying most of the other company's. That is the reason, I am very loyal to National.

Arrived Friday, July 18 around 3:00 PM (honestly not sure if it was A or B side) - there were 2 Impalas, 1 altimas, maybe 4 Corollas and 1 Camry as well as 2 Jeep Compass. We took the Compass with 500 miles on it. It was okay for a rental but I definitely know now that I would never buy one!

It was my rental of an Escape from the Emerald Aisle in June that prompted me to buy one! It's a great way to "try out" a car.

Arrived yesterday (7/30) on the A side. Aisle and executive aisle had several town & country mini vans, about 6, 4 door pickup trucks, about 10 suvs, small and midsize, a couple prius, malibus, impala, avengers. Very well stocked. We took a town and country with 1,800 miles on it!

Was there on A aisle on 08/02 - saw a bunch of Sonata, Impala, one mini-SUV and I got into the Prius. Like the idea of hybrid vehicle considering I drive one at home.

BTW, there was a Chevy Charger in the Executive Aisle - teenage son wanted me to get that one. Luckily I'm not an Executive member. But how does one become an executive member?

To make it to the executive level, which lets you choose from either of the two aisles, you need to rent a total of 40 days a year or more. We average about 50 days a year so have been executive members for many years. Sadly with the cost of national compared to other companies it getting hard for us to stay loyal to them. There are some other perks to executive level too like being guaranteed at least a full size car at the intermediate car price and getting your free days quicker. This info is all on their website.

National Executive membership is also a free perk that comes with the American Express Platinum Card (and presumably the Centurion Card but I'm not lucky/rich enough to be invited to get one of those, so I'm not sure!)
