What's good at Chef Mickey's dinner?

So, I have read a lot of negative things about Chef Mickey's dinner. We had gone there for breakfast back in 2008 and loved it. This time we decided to try it for dinner. My sister wants to take her girls there too and they are going to be at WDW with us for the first 4 days of our 10-night trip. It worked out better in our schedule to go there for dinner rather than breakfast since they wanted to do the breakfast at 1900 Park Fare and see those characters as well.

So, what is good on the dinner buffet at Chef mickey's? I have read about the parmesan mashed potatoes being good, but what about any main dishes, salads, etc.? Is there a carving section with prime rib or ham or turkey or anything like that? Do they have some things that taste good but are not really bad for you? And how are the desserts? I'm a dessert person and it's one of the things I look forward to at a buffet so I can taste different ones. Thanks in advance for the info!

We were there last week, and although we had a great time with the characters the food was the worst we had during the entire week. They do have a carving station which had roast beef and ham. Other than that and the potatoes, I was very unimpressed with everything else. Chicken, Salmon, Pasta was all bland. Breads and dessert bar were good.

We love CM dinner! Besides the parm potatoes , I in particular, loved the salmon and the soups. I could make a meal on soup and salad! I had the absolute best potato leek soup there last trip! And yes, they do have a carving station - YUM! Desserts, well, there was a lot of them, but to tell the truth, I can't remember much about the dessert! I'm much more of a meat/potato girl and focused on that! I do seem to remember a yummy bite sized cheesecake though!

We're not going to Chef Mickey's for the food...we're going there for the characters since we will have my sons (3 and 5) and my nieces (6 and 9) with us, all of whom LOVE those characters. I just wanted to know if there would be a few things that are good on the buffet and that way I will try those first. If the carving station and potatoes are good, then that is what I will eat. As long as there are a couple of things I like, I am happy. I don't expect to like every single item on any buffet, but when I eat at one, I always hope there is something I will like so I don't feel like I still need to eat dinner when I leave.

We really like the desserts there. They had a make your own sundae bar with all kinds of toppings (M&Ms, gummy bears, chocolate chips) and oreo Mickeys (Oreo cookies with chocolate domes and chocolate chip ears).

And they have the usual kid-friendly foods on the buffet as well, right? As long as there is either mac 'n' cheese, chicken nuggets, pizza, or PB & J, my kids are thrilled!

Personally I was disappointed in the dessert options. They had the make your own sundae bar, but I'm not that into that. The oreo Mickey things were OK.

I did like the Parmesan mashed potatoes and the Mac n cheese was good. They did have roast beef and I think turkey at the carving station. They were OK, I miss the Prime Rib. The Peel and eat shrimp was good also.

I thought the salad bar was very good. The soup was vegetable beef the night we were there and it tasted just like Campbell's. Everything else was mushy - seemed like it was all casseroles with cheese, mushy pasta casseroles, and mushy meat. The dessert table was okay - rice krispie treats, brownies, make-you-own-sundae.

Every person has a different experience. If you go in with a positive attitude, you'll be fine. It's not terrible, it's just fine.

I really want to go to Chef Mickey's next trip for breakfast or dinner, we canceled our ADR last trip because we wanted to go to DHS early that day to spend more time there.

I've absolutely loved the food at other character meals like Ohana breakfast, 1900 Park Fare breakfast, Donald's Safari breakfast, and Crystal Palace lunch and dinner.

We did have 1 yucky meal at Hollywood and Vine... it was on par with your cheap neighborhood chain all you can eat buffet place, actually it was worse.

And all I read is bad food reviews about Chef Mickey's. I'd really like to go so I keep reading, looking for good food reviews..... But if the food is as bad as Hollywood and Vine, I can see the CM characters at other places.

So, please tell me something good you ate there!

It's been a while since my family and I were at Chef Mickey's for dinner so I don't remember any specific items, however the few times we have been there I don't remember ever saying anything bad about the food.

Mmmm, the Mickey heads. And there was a bread pudding thing that was good (caramel or something) The parmesan potatoes are good, and the peel and eat shrimp. Everything else this last trip was pretty icky.

It was our favorite restaurant from our first trip in 06. Since then it's just gone downhill each repeat visit.

The food at Chef Mickey's is decent. The draw is the character interaction and the dessert bar.

I did like the carved roast beef an mashed potatoes.

I am crossing my fingers for good food. We are going next week. We have done Chef Mickey for breakfast 3 times. It was okay but we prefer Crystal Palace breakfast. I love 1900 Park Fare for dinner but our utensils were dirty both times we have gone which didn't go over very well with dh. He isn't fond of buffet style meals. I am hoping Chef Mickey will have something good since I talked him into it. I just wanted to try it at least once. Now I'm heading over to the food Porn thread to look for Chef Mickey pictures.

I enjoyed the salmon, chicken, and especially the alfredo pasta w/chicken, potatoes. I really tried to be good and not pig out too much so filled up alot on the salmon, roast chicken and veges.

That potato leek soup is delicious! We had it in 2/08 and it was to-die-for! I hoped that they'd serve it again on next trip that August, but we wound up with a smoked tomato bisque that was very good too (although the leek soup was better).

Last trip in 9/09, they served minestrone and it wasn't very good at all. I hope when we go this coming August that if they don't have the excellent leek soup, they at least have a cream-based soup since those seem to be better.

Timing might have something to do with it too. We always get the first possible seating. In fact, we usually show up a few minutes before opening as a walk-up and are always seated right away.

At that time there are no crowds, the food is fresh and the character interaction is amazing since they are not rushed along.

Well I am a fan of CM's for dinner.

It was one of our better meals last trip (dec 09).

The mashed potatoes as PP said were fabulous! Also the strip loin was very good (no prime rib anymore) and the turkey was good as well.

The creamy chicken pasta dish was also a highlight as well as the greenbeans, I can't remember what was special but they were very tasty!

Our ressie was for 5pm, early in the evening when everything was fresh.

I had forgotten about these - had them for the first time in Oct09. They are similar to the Oreo bon-bons at Cape May - but not quite as good. I still put 3 or 4 away though.
