What's a good middle name for Ben?

When we were having our second son, I was dead set on Benjamin (we call him Ben or Benny, only Benjamin when he's in trouble). My DH wanted some other name which I can't seem to remember now but I made a compromise and told him he could give our son his middle name. Jokingly he said Bradshaw, for his favorite football player Terry Bradshaw from the Steelers. At first I was like no way and then it actually grew on me. So Benjamin Bradshaw and it was and we get lots of compliments on his name and not many people even realize that he is named after a Steeler, lol.

We had to make compromises too when naming our kids. I wanted to name my daughter Talya to go with my Russian background, but my husband said it would be too hard for others to pronounce, especially in school so he said we should name her Taylor because it is still similar. I chose the middle name Paige. For my son, my husband chose Reagan, after President Reagan, and I chose Chase for his middle name in keeping with the political theme.

Is the middle initial really a concern? Like if the initials wound up being BOT or BMT, would anyone (especially kids in school) even know the kid's middle name? I cannot imagine that anyone knows my kids' middle names at their school. Middle names are usually rarely used that I would not even consider initials if I really loved a name.

I think you should go with whatever has meaning to you. If Kenobi is meaningful then use it. Or Lucas...I don't think it matters that the baby will have a cousin with the same name. Not like you're using it as a first name.

Congratulations!! Hope everything goes smoothly for you.

I really truly wish we had a family member deserving that honor. :sad2: There would be no question if we did. Even if it meant a goofy acronym or abbreviation for initials.

We actually went way back on the family tree. Conrad Heyer crossed the Delaware with Washington and is my DH's great, great, great, etc., etc. grandfather. Thus, we have Benjamin Conrad. But, he's usually Ben, Benny or Beno, only Benjamin Conrad! when he's in trouble! :rotfl:

Best wishes on the birth and enjoy your sweet baby Ben!

Ummmm Ok......I don't know that the association of the Earl of Lucan would make any difference to me at all, in fact, pretty sure it wouldn't, but thanks for the UK history lesson. lol

There's actually a second UK history lesson associated with the Lucan name, one that's much more current and nasty. I had forgotten about it when I originally posted. The current (7th) Earl of Lucan has been a missing fugitive since 1974, when he was indicted for the very brutal murder of his children's nanny. It's still in the news periodically because his son is still trying to get permission to claim the title. There actually is a popular expression in the UK, "to do a Lucan", meaning to deliberately disappear in order to avoid punishment or duck responsibility.

I never meant to pick on you, but the world is getting smaller every day, and I think it's always a good idea to Google any name that you're thinking of using to make sure that it isn't infamous somewhere else in the world. You never know where your kid might end up living or working 30 years from now.

Holy cow, that's much worse....sounds like it runs in the family. :scared1: I do have a very close friend in the UK and I've never heard him use that term, we talk almost every day (met him here on the Dis actually) and he uses all kinds of "uk terms" on me. LOL :)

I didn't think you were "picking on me" per se and your point about not knowing where you kid might end up is valid. :)

My DS is Benjamin John, after both of his grandfathers. Don't call him BJ, he hates that!

Does he ever get called Benji? One of DS' preK teachers called him that and I cringed...but it didn't stick.

My FIL started calling our ds Benji the first time he met him. I IMMEDIATELY said, no..his name is Ben, Benny, or Benjamin...NOT Benji.

His response was that you can't control what other people will call him...especially when he gets older and goes to school, etc.

First stepMIL hit him on his arm and then SHE told him we can name our son whatever we wanted and when ds gets older he would be able to tell people himself what his name was.... until then he would honor his grandchild's parents' preferences and he wouldn't use the name Benji, EVER!

GO Nana! :thumbsup2

Ds is now 4.5yo and he will tell you he has four names, Benjamin, Ben, Benny and Benjamin Tyler....but people only call him that when he is in trouble! :-)

My objection to "Lucan" is that it sounds like a hero's name from a Vampire/Romance book .

I think I like "Lucas" the best. It flows with "Benjamin" and doesn't result in unfortunate initials.

FWIW, my DD's middle name is my last name.

Unless the OP's last name starts with T

I like Lucas too. I hope the OP comes back and updates, she was supposed to have him the other day right?

Congrats OP !!!!!

I love Benji, but DS doesn't. He prefers Ben now.
