Are you still letting the kids go trick-or-treating? Are you letting them eat the candy right away or waiting 24 hours so that there are no flu germs on the packaging? Are you letting them attend parties?

I had thought I'd let them go trick-or-treating but no eating any homemade baked goods parents send into the school, no big parties and no eating the candy for 24 hours. I'm thinking I'll let them choose a ziploc bag full of stuff out of our own treat bowl and then they can only eat treats from that for at least the first 24 hours. I don't trust that people's hands are going to be clean and their bodies flu-free when they're handing out the candy or baking goodies for the class.

You would be better off to not let them eat any candy until the flu season is over! All of that sugar destroys the immune system :)

We will be carrying on as usual - same as any other year!!!!

Me to, I will let my kids go trick or treating. For them it is not about the treats, but about the fun. I only allow them one or 2 things anyhow, so i will just let them pick 2 things out, wash the wrappers, and then have them wash there hands as I will be the one handling the packages, I will just shake them out of the package I guess. As much as I want my kids to live in a bubble right now, I can't deprieve them of Halloween, what if it were your childs last Halloween, would you take that away, weather it's they are to old for T or Ting. or god forbid something happened to them. There is no guarantee in life.
Have a great Halloween everyone.

About washing wrappers: your children are far more likely to get the disease from the human contact involved in the trick or treating. Cough Cough Cough, boom, you've got it.

Halloween is the one day of the year that you won't necessarily be embarrassed to wear a surgical mask. :thumbsup2

I'd like to say it will be business as usual, but our poor girl (5 yrs old) came home from school today with fever and headache. Spent two hours on the couch before running to the bathroom and whooping her cookies.

We've talked about it, and I promised that if she has to miss Hallowe'en, we'd make it up to her. Poor little thing! She ADORES Hallowe'en, and she was going to dress up as Rosetta-the-pink-fairy (sparkly shoes included) this year!

My dd brought up that hundreds of kids will be ringing the same doorbells with unclean hands so make sure they wash their hands as soon as they come home and keep their hands out of their mouths.

We will let DD trick or treat but we always throw out all the candy she gets anyways so will be doing it again this year. She just likes dressing up and going out....LOL

We are pretty much just carrying on as usual. Not eating the candy, washing the wrappers etc are things I had not even considered to tell you the truth. I teach Kindergarten and I can tell you one thing for certain, the best advice is to tell other families and parents to KEEP THE KIDS HOME IF THEY ARE SICK!! This has already been a big problem in my room this year. :confused3 Not sure why they send them when they are ill. Especially with all the heightened awareness and this H1N1 strain.
I like the other poster's suggestion of hand washing when returning home due to all the germs on doors etc.

I did not know that I will stay away from sugar to build up my immune system wait I can't do that I depend on jolly ranchers to keep me awake and focused especially during marathon studying

DS is dressing up as the "boy in the bubble" :)

Agree completely. Too much is being made of the whole thing! :sad2:

Odd that this is even an issue, your child on a daily bases is at risk of contracting H1N1 by just living. Your child being in school alone puts her at risk, opening doors( bathroom, home room, main doors) ,play items( they should ban play things that can't be washed like playdough),playing with 20+kids who all have family( so well over 60 people's germs)...... Life is risky. though H1N1 isn't a huge issue yet for my area as of yet we wash our hand and eat healthy other then that no way of really protecting ourselfs(BTW the flu shot might protect you,or it might not according the the insert on the vaccine).

Have to say it seemed MUCH quieter in the trick or treater department last night. We always go down to a friends house in the Queen/Broadview area and last year it was steady kids for about 2 hours. This year a trickle. She bought enough for about 200 kids and last year we ran out while this year there is plenty left over. Wonder if it has anything to do with the HINI?

we carried on as usal, then used hand sanitizer at the end of the night... wow the media sure scared everyone with this one didn't they !
