What would you never want in your home even with unlimited money?

A pool for sure. My wife made it clear when we bought our house 40 years ago she didn't want a pool. Her mom had one. When her mom passed away, we had to keep up the pool for 3 months until we sold the house. Even with a pool service, and a cover....it was September to December, leaf season......I couldn't keep the leaves out of the pool. Too much work.
Had a hot tub. No issues with that for 25 years. Looked at replacing it and the upkeep on the spas now is crazy. Our old one, you put a tablespoon of chlorine in after every use, and run the filter for five minutes, and you're good. Now they use some sort of cartridge for the chlorine every three months at a cost of $20 each, too expensive.
I've got to say, $20 every three months would not be too much for something I enjoy.

But more than the $18 I was spending for powdered chlorine that lasted 5 years.

Gaudy wallpaper or gold trim. I much prefer a cozy environment, with a modern kitchen.

yes it is, but it's still only $120 a year for something you can enjoy daily
Does the more expensive product save time /effort? Does it provide a better finished product? If so, I might be willing to pay more.

Things I wouldn't want in my house:
- I agree with those who say, A smoker.
- A bar. I drink occasionally, but I find it weird to set up essentially a household shrine to alcohol.
- A pet snake or rat.
- A Ouiji Board. Why tempt fate?

These are really interesting.

FWIW, courteous smokers do exist. My wife and I both smoke. I don't need a lecture, I know it's bad for my health. But neither of us would EVER smoke inside our abode. Only outside. Even in Europe, where we spend a lot of time and is much more accepting of smokers, we are super cautious.

Why are so many people against bars? I have a home bar because I collect spirits and like craft cocktails.

My kid had a fancy rat when they were young. It was cute.

We are clearly very different people:
- I didn't lecture you about smoking, and I believe some smokers are more courteous than others, but it's impossible to keep smoke to yourself. Even if you step away to smoke, the smell clings to your clothes and comes back in with you.
- Having alcohol in the house isn't what I find odd. It's dedicating a fancy place to display them -- I don't see bottles of alcohol as any different from, say, jars of peanut butter or bottles of soy sauce.
- Rats -- it's their hands that weird me out. What makes a rat fancy?

Clearly different people - understatement of the year!

I know you didn't lecture me about smoking. I wasn't referring to you! I was trying to head off the "you shouldn't smoke" crowd. So chill out, ok?

You clearly have never tasted a 5,000$ bottle of scotch. Maybe your soy sauce differs from mine, but I find something cool in displaying bottles of spirits, in what I consider, is an art form .

What makes a rat fancy? It's their fine taste in classical music. LOL Fancy Rat simply refers to a domesticated rat; one that is meant to be kept as a pet.

Not gonna lie, I kinda wanna have a beer with you.

No, I haven't tasted the $5,000 scotch, but -- if I owned it -- I'd put it in the cabinet above the microwave with the other alcohol. Art form? Okay.

Fancy = domesticated. Interesting.

The wanna have a beer is a high compliment, Lord M! We might disagree, but I think we'd have fun.

Smoking def. inside the house. And it's not just cigarette smoke, weed, cigar smoke and vaping. Part allergies, part it's gross to be surrounded in, part it makes it very difficult to sell anything that absorbs it, etc. We've had people who smoke over they either smoke outside or can do it in our garage although it's been a long time since we've had someone who did smoke over. My best friend used to at least spray body mist even when she'd smoke in her car because her boyfriend at the time didn't really like her smoking. On the other hand I do find it very difficult to be around my sister-in-law right after she smokes especially in the wintertime even with them going outside that smoke clings to her clothes and the air around her as she re-enters the house. Maybe it's just how much she smoked or what she smoked because it wasn't that bad with my best friend.

Something else would probably be things that serve zero purpose but seemingly look neat or are more designed to impress. Whenever we look at model homes we often find these things, just impractical designs but ones you know probably cost a bit usually found in a finished basement.

ETA: this is an example from a model house we saw a few weeks back, it's a nice wine storage but without it being an actual temp controlled room and with concerns regarding humidity even being in the basement, it was just something they said "hey let's just build this in the stairs". I'm not sure who the clientele of this was really but it's not the serious wine person likely.

LOL. I'm retired on no income and cheap. So $120 is not "only". Just my nature. I am about the only person on my street without a house cleaner, lawn service and I don't have an unlimited pass at the car wash. Do all those things myself to save money.

I don't think I would even care to, not because of it being alcohol but because I'd be like yeah that $5K could be used for something else. The people I know that have bars in basements aren't really about being so showy, it's just a nice entertainment area. But I'm admittedly not around collectors. We don't talk about how much liquor or stuff costs it's impolite to do so..but for circle of friends that are into collections I could see that being a point to actually talk about.

Bars most especially in basements but sometimes done as a butlers pantry style thing are incredibly common around here in new homes but again it's usually more about an entertainment place rather than a "look at me look at me" kind of thing. I've seen ones that actually look like a bar's back display where there are display shelves but it's usually a builder trying to show off.

Only in model homes (which I suppose will end up being someone's house) do I ever see these usually impractical displays. Sure it looks cool but it's for a very specific clientele. Not necessarily a collector though.

Our next door neighbor built a bar when he finished his basement pretty cool too but they are a chill couple who just like to entertain with friends and neighbors. When we built our house they asked us if we planned on putting a bar in because there was an alcove in the basement that people would commonly use and installing a water line ahead of time is much easier. We declined though.
