For the past 5 years when visiting Fort Wilderness we have always stayed in a cabin or a home. We really, really love them. Also, for years I have tried to get my DH to rent an RV to drive down in and stay in at FW.
Well, today he started looking into this. By the time we drive to where we would have to pick up the RV, load our things, get supplies(groceries & other extra things), learn how to set up the RV and pay the extra in gas that it would cost from driving our minivan, we would spend about the same thing we would spend on just driving our own van and staying in either a cabin or home. I am sure that the kids(DD/11, DS/5 & DD/3) would love having the extra room and privileges of driving down in the RV, but after being used to the extra space in the cabin while there, I now have reservations about the RV thing. Would some of you please give me your opinions?!?!?!I am no stranger to camping, I camped my entire childhood with my parents and with family friends. I guess I am just a little nervous because it has been so long!!
But, I value all of your opinions, so pleeeeaaaaassse
help me!!!!

I would like for this to be posted also on the resorts board, but I do not know how to post the same post on 2 different boards. If a moderator reads this, could you please let me know how to do this?!?!?!?!?!

Having stayed at FW in homes, cabins, a TT and a motorhome, I have to say that I love the camping best!

That said, however, all things being equal I would opt to stay in the cabins. You are familiar and comfortable with them, and renting and setting up a RV may give you some unexpected surprises or problems.

You should also be forewarned that the RV lifestyle is addictive. You could find yourself looking at that dream RV!;)

in 1 week I'll be 'home':p :p :p :p

We've looked into this too, and we always decide that the cost of renting the RV, gas (especially with the way gas prices are now!), and the price of a preferred campsite are way more than getting a cabin and having everything all set up for us already.

And, with the cabin, you get daily housekeeping! When we camp, somehow I always end up doing all the cleanup work, cooking, etc, etc.

Either way, you know you'll have a wonderful time! :D

If you are thinking of eventually buying a RV, then i would rent one first. FW is a great place to start camping! **WARNING**, FW will spoil you, no other campground can compare!
However, if you are just thinking of renting for a one time camping trip, I would opt for the cabin. Renting a RV ends up costing more sometimes then staying in a cabin or home.
Whatever you decide, you'll have a wonderful time in FW!

We are going in October and have a pop-up. We were thinking of renting an RV instead for the convenience of setup, more space, etc. How much do they cost to rent?

<FONT COLOR="purple">We have rented an RV each Ft. Wilderness trip. With 9 of us going the last time, driving from NW PA.....it was easier and less expensive to get the RV than drive 2 vehicles and get 2 cabins. That said.....if I lived as close to WDW as you do, I wouldn't bother with an RV especially if you have to go out of your way to pick it up. I'd stay in the Wilderness cabin or home.

FTWFAN,
Like you, I grew up camping (in a motorhome mostly). While your ride down would be more comfortable, you'll have more room in the cabins when you get there. You also won't have to deal with the added pressure of driving such a large vehicle down. If you should want your van for anything, it will be there. I've considered renting a camper several times and just haven't found the cost to be worthwhile. With the cabin, you just pull up and go in (no set-up, etc.).
Whatever you decide, have a great trip!
