About a month ago, I came home to find a hand written note in my door stating: "My name is 'Joe Blow'and I used to live here. Could you please give me a call @ this number and let me know if any mail has come for me."

O.K., now mind you, I am a single mom of an 8 y/o & have lived in this duplex apartment for over a year. I have seen mail for the former tenant; junk mail, past due parking ticket notices, etc., all of which I ususally just trash. so I call to tell him this and he says that he's not worried about that stuff. He just got a new car and he's waiting for the title to come from the dept of motor vechicles. so I just said o.k. and hung up. Obviously, for what ever reason, this man is STILL using my address. I did get the title in the mail but did not call him, because I don't want some strange man coming to my door. Because unless Im expecting someone or someone calls from outside to say who it is, I Do Not answer my door for saftey reasons.
So here's the thing, for the past 2-3 weeks someone has been coming to the door at different times, ringing the bell. I looked out once, and saw a man I didn't know. I'm assumimg its the former tenant. But I still don't want to answer. What kind of nut is still using an address from over a year ago?...
What would you do?

That's really weird. Maybe you could call him and tell him to meet you at a neutral place (like a store or something--so lots of people would be around and you could get away quickly if you had to, and you wouldn't be stuck at your house with him there), and give him the title and also use that time to tell him to stop using your address.

And I would call the police if he keeps coming to your door (or if those other people do).

A month ago this started? He can easily update his address with the DMV.
Sounds like he is lying to the government about where he lives.

I wouldn't give it to him and I wouldn't call. Write, "occupant moved, not at this address" on the envelope and pop it back in the mail to be returned to the DMV. If he does contact you, tell him it never came. Good luck.

I would either do that or just ask him for his current address and mail it to him, but let him know that if any further mail comes for him, you will return it to sender. The only reason I'd do this is because if he is creepy enough to do what he's been doing, I wouldn't want to tick him off. Just to be safe :confused3 I would also speak to your landlord about it.

I would feel very uncomfortable as well. Ask him to meet you at the police station! :thumbsup2 Get there a few minutes early and ask someone about the address issue. Sounds like he lying to someone (DMV, Insurance co. (rates are based on where you live)). :confused3
Good luck!

Meet him at a neutral place! Are you out of your mind? Just send the mail back to the post office as wrong address. Never, Never, meet a strange at a neutral place. Only trouble can come from this. If you just can't stand it, tell him to send you a self addressed stamped envelope and you will send the mail to him. :sad2:

I think that is the best option. Sounds kind of creepy to me. Good luck! :sunny:

I doubt he's a random stalker if his name actually matches the former tenant...and his title did actually arrive at your address. Just ask him his new address and send it to him. You'll probably never hear from him again.

If you live in a duplex, do you rent? If so, can you take it to your landlord and explain the situation to them, telling them that you are uncomfortable having this man come to your home. See if they will call him, have him pick it up from them, and insist that he stop using your address.

I wouldn't meet him anywhere.

If she calls and asks for his forwarding address, he'll know she has the title and will probably show up at her doorstep "saving her" time. I'd contact your landlord and leave it with him/her, and then call and say where you left it.

There's quite possibly a reason why he used his old address (after more than a year) and he's so anxious to get this title in his hands...............and the reason may not be a good one. It could be a stolen vehicle or shady deal or insurance fraud and he doesn't want them to be able to find where he really lives. Take it back to the post office - ask THEM to be the ones to mark it "Not at this address" with their official stamp and have THEM send it back to Motor Vehicles. When the guy calls, tell him you don't know anything about what happened to his title.

I would call the police and tell them about it and see what they say. The guy has no right to use your address for anything.

It smells fishy! AND if it smells fishy, it IS fishy! It doesn't make sens for this guy to continue using his old address for a year! Not only using it, but using it to file paperwork with the DMV! OUTRAGEOUS! This looser is up to no good. I don't know what this schmuck is up to, but I do know it isn't good. You mentioned traffic notices. I suspect it has something to do with that.

Stop talking to this guy, and don't even think of meeting him anywhere! Don't let him know the title ever came. Just say you haven't seen it (if he confronts you). Write what the other posters suggested on the envelope so that the title goes back to the DMV.

You have absolutely ZERO! obligation to help this looser! He needs to start using his real address, and stop using yours!

I love it when you do this! :lmao:

I was expecting my license renewal form this year. It turns out they were mailed to the addresses that were on file from when everyone was originaly applying for the license. Which was my parents old house, I am four adresses beyond that!!!!

That's our govmt at work....

It is funny how they will not deliver mail (if it is something you need) if the name is not on the mailbox, but if it is garbage (like an old tennant's mail) they will leave it.

To ease your mind, if you gave someone mail then you are tampering with the mail delivery which I am sure is illegal. What are you going to do, check his ID?
Just mark it "no such person at this address" and put it back in the mailbox.

I agree! Let the DMV handle it. People get paid for taking care of matters of this sort. One can never be too careful in this day and age. Being single you have to be doubly careful IMHO.

Thanks everyone for all of the great advice. I think I'll return the letter to the mailman when I see him or take it back to the P.O. I just hope that he, or who ever it was at my door goes away!

If this schmuck has the hootzfah to bother you AT ALL, CALL THE POLICE! Pick up the phone and call the police! I'm sure they would be very interested in why he is giving an address that he has not resided at in over a year to the DMV! The police will get to the bottom of it very quickly. ;)

Do you know what hootzfah is? It means alot of nerve.

Sorry but I have a different opinion on the matter. You should have never trashed any of his mail even if it was just "junk" mail. Remember, it is illegal to destroy or tamper with mail even if it is delivered to you in error. You should write "return to sender, not at this address" on all of his mail and leave it in your mailbox. Eventually the post office will realize that the guy doesn't live at your address and you will quit getting his mail.

the former tenant of the house we are renting never did a change of address. when i spoke to the mail carrier they had the landlord fill out a form that stopped the mail from being delivered (except the odd junk mail). because the landlord was the legal owner of the home they could file the form vs. me doing it. in the event anything of importance arrives in the other person's name i just write 'moved not at this address' on the envelope and put it into the outgoing mail slot.

with regards to gov. forms, if you write this on the front of the envelope the agency should change the address to the local office until they verify a new residential or mailing address. i had plenty of clients that tried using alternate mailing addresses to defraud 'the system', unless someone returned the mail to the post-office so i got it back with it was very hard to determine when this was happening (with public assistance once we had a rental agreement and a utility bill, unless the client claimed a change in expense we could'nt require they provide a new/updated verification-so they may have moved out several years prior but continued to report they were at the old place).
