Ive had a terrible day at work, and really I love my job. I work in a deli, I have for over a year now but I just started working for winn dixie deli.

Thing is im friends with my manager (have known her for 10 years or more and is a neighbor) Shes a nice person, and really fun to talk to. I injoy working for her.

But tonight, im about to just scream i quite and never look back. We have this older woman, named ruth who works with us. When debbie (my boss) is around shes nice to me and everyone eles. But when its just me and her, she is so mean to me! I know im younger, but im 21! she talks to me like a 8 year old and is always telling me what to do and how "she" does it. I know what im doing... and dont need her like a hawk over my shoulder.

Ive told debbie of this, and really i dont think she belived me. Since shes always seen her being nice. But tonight, just did it for me.

Ok just let ya know, someone comes in at opening leaves about 2-3, them someone does at 11-12 and stays till 7 or 8 and the closer comes in at 1-3. I came in at 1 today. Ruth was due in at 2 and was going to stay till 7. We have a mid shift person to help the closer. They help get things cleaned so its not so much on the other.

The other day I was mid-shift for her and I busted my butt getting the fryer cleaned, a slicer, the cooler and half of the floor. This is what your supposed to do before you leave at 7. I even stay till 8 to make sure it is done.

Tonight, ruth cleaned for me a slicer. the end. thats it! I could of done that in 10 min.! she didnt even clean the fryer that takes atleast 45 min. to clean! She left at 7.. she was only there for 5 hours. She could of stayed till 8 but did not.

to top this all off, I had to clean everything before 9 o clock. 10 min. before she had to leave, I burnt my finger on a heat lamp inside the hot case (were fried chicken is etc) it is really a 3rd degree burn. Now as she was walking out the door, she said oh there is some spray stuff there in the cabneit to keep it from bubbling. Well that was to late, I got a giant blister/bubble on it. I sprayed it on and I felt like it was on fire.

So alone now, only been here not even month I look around for something to help with burns. Now this is were im just pushed over the limit.

THERE WAS NO FIRST AID KIT ANYWERE!!!!

Ive never seen or worked in a deli that never had one! I heard this is against the law even! So I try to bear it out. I would work till I couldnt bare the pain and run it under cold water a few seconds. It helped some, but it still burned. Then I worked some more till almost tears before I stuck it under cold water again.. Mind you what I was doing was, emptying out a hot case, the heat was hurting it. Washing dishes, in hot water. Cleaning a fryer.. with hot grease popping once in a while. Not to mention the plastic gloves was like torture!

After a hour, it was after 8 and I couldnt take it anymore. I was crying and just so far behind and tired from it all. I walk up to the front desk to see if they have anything for burns. They have a first aid kit up there, with bandaids, thinks for cuts and itching? But nothing for burns. So she gets some aloe stuff off a shelf and gives it to me to use. It helped.. for 15 min. then I had to apply some more everytime.

Well at 9:30 I got everything done. I left debbie my manager a note to call me in the morning. Im telling her what ruth done, and how I could not find anything for burns.

Now this is were im not sure what to do. I know shes going to defend ruth. I know shes a older woman and I knew this job was going to be harder. But I just cant work with that woman again.

If anything i might just leave winn dixie, and the firt aid kit is bothering me. If something happens dont you think its possible to sue them for this? Really thats just insane not having one. What if I cut my finger? what wrap a paper towel around it.. yea that would be sanitary around food.

I don't know what to tell ya except I hope things go better for ya. When it comes to work, my motto is "do the best you can do". If other people are slackers it just makes you look better. As for a lawsuit, I don't think you have a case. Sorry. Goodluck.

Yeah- the lawsuit- no, no case.

And if you got hurt, you should have reported it right away anyway, IMO.

And sorry to tell you, but some people are just irritating to work with. I have a feeling if you throw a temper tantrum and tell your boss you can't work with Ruth again, you're boss will say, "Sorry, see ya." Because what if you don't like working with the next person? You won't always like working with certain people! But, you can't just get them moved because you don't like them.

I know it's frustrating and not really fair, but, that's the way the world works sometimes.

And YES- you should have a first aid kit. I would definitely address that with your boss.

Just wanted to add to make sure you keep an eye on your finger. You might want to see the doctor if it is really bad. You don't want to get an infection. I would get some Polysporin or other antibacterial ointment to soothe and heal it. Hope you feel better soon.

If you like working at a deli, you can find this type of job anywhere. My thought is this, if the lady you work with is not your boss, then just ignore her. Your 21, your not a little girl anymore. She doesn't pay your mortgage or bills. As to a lawsuit, if you are already thinking about this, you should probably start looking for a more friendlier place to work. Life is to short to put up with type of working atmosphere. I would bet you can find a better job and one that pays more if you just start looking. Good Luck!

Thanks everyone. My boss debbie, actully begged me to come work for her. She was short handed and knew I had experienced in a deli. So no she wouldnt just say "see ya" if I complained. I hate to brag but im the best worker there right now .

Also i couldnt report the accident since after 5 all the managers of the store etc are gone home. Ruth knew about it but thats it. I plan to tell debbie about it today when i go in. its morning know and is bubbled up and ugly I hardly got any sleep since it wouldnt stop burning.

I doubt ill be sueing winn dixie over the first aid kit, I was just a little P'ed off about it last night.

Another thing is debbie has told me she was going to fire ruth, for ruth only wants to work like 2 days a week. She said she wants someone who can work at least 4 etc.

I would consider the lack of a first aid kit to be a MAJOR concern, myself. Let us know how Debbie responds?
