What would make you buy direct?

I'm just wondering what everyone's breaking-point would be. Obviously lower cost per point, but I'm talking about the usual $120 (or $130) with usual incentives per point.

Would it be something like extra perks? (extra banking options??)

or

DVC @ The Poly or Yacht Club? (small epcot resort ala BCV or monorail resort ala BLT)

Or something else? (keep it realistic :wizard:)

:) We were not able to find other financing options last year due to the economy and it was so easy. The local rate that DH could find was 8% and the preferred rate at 10.75% from Disney was kinda, sorta close. We did not want to remove money from savings and I wanted instant gratification which has been exactly what I paid for. Have not regretted one cent. Our cost was $93 perpoint at AKV with a incentive discount and referral discount. My referral source got a $200 gift card, too. We returned from our second trip 12/10 and I was on the phone with MS yesterday and got a Standard view at Kidani for 5/1-5/8. We are already booked to take a trip with my parents 10/28-11/04 next year. :cloud9:

I'm guessing that if someone (or someone + their significant other) took the tour, then no one qualifies as a referal. right?

I'm not buying any more points. When they hit $80+, I thought they were too high. I think the last we bought were in the high $60's.

We just bought direct in March'10. Why: I'm not a person who can wait months to hash out a deal...we bought OKW with the extra years(we wanted them) and we were able to pick which UY we wanted without having to wait for a resale with it came available.

Been watching the resales and have only found 1 that fit all 3 of the above critieria. Did I spend more...yes, was I happy within a few weeks...yes, was I able to book at 11 months from March'11...yes! All in all it worked for us.

We bought AKV & BLT direct from Disney before the resorts opened. Have no regrets about the price we paid, and if we ever add-on again that will be direct as well.

Paid direct because we wanted some specific things:
1) BLT
2) August Use Year
3) Specific # of Pts

Resale couldn't get us all 3, at least not without a significant wait. $102 or so a pt + closing costs resale versus $112 also didn't save us much money.

That said, I'd consider resale if I was in no hurry and saw what I wanted. We won't give on Use Year. I don't have any desire to have to transfer points across memberships.

We know we want to add some points in the future. Probably 75-100 more total and we'll be done.

We bought direct before VGC opened too. The salespeople intimated that the points might sell out before our next trip (about 6 months later), which was a bit sneaky of them, but since we got two trips out of those points before anything came on the resale market for those points (we paid $96/pt), and the resale market now seems to be around $90, so it was well worth it. ;) If there's another resort that we feel we have to have before it opens, and the discounts were decent enough that we'd consider an add-on direct.

When the price is right, you get an INSTANT gratification of points and the 11 month booking window that I need for certain dates. Also with the rumors floating around about resale it just pointed me toward direct. I have bought 2 contracts via resale and have never bought from DVC because of price. This weekend I finally paid the price and bought direct. At $91.80 price point I could not pass up the Aulani points. I would not have bought but with Aulani being local to me we decided why not. And it would be a few years before resale points are available.

Everybody's situation is different so I'm not sure you can get a correct answer.

We looked at joining in 2007 and the minimum purchase was 160 points @ $100 per point at SSR and we didn't want to go in debt for that.

In August, 2010 we saw a small resale contract for BWV, 100 points, December use year with all 100, 2009 banked points and jumped on it.

For us this was the best deal we've seen and couldn't pass it up. :santa:

Why did we buy direct? Several reasons, we had the cash on hand to pay for our full contract, didnt have to worry about any financing. We didnt want to deal with the resale and having to worry about any possible deals falling through (ROFR), we get to use our points immediatley, and lastly the big WHAT IF! What if Disney decideds to do something with resale contracts that limits them. I would be kicking myself in the tail if I bought and that happened.

To me you cant put a price on happiness. Of course you are going to pay more today, than what someone paid 10 years ago, but then again, 10 years ago I wasnt in a financial position to buy into DVC. The wife and I are 37 and 36 years old with two small children, so for the next 40 years hopefully we can enjoy the perks of owning a piece of disney and be able to share it will our kids, our kids kids, and the rest of our family.

I kind of agree. We did break our own rule when AKV came on, but we bought only a minimum number of points to use every 3rd year. The bulk of our points were purchased direct from Disney for $60-65/point. I think our AKV points were $80 something. There is nothing short of a HUGE price DECREASE that is getting me to buy anymore points. I'll make do with the 449 I have.

I'll answer your question by sharing what WON'T help make me want to buy direct:

A cost of $40 to $50 per point higher than the going market price.

Here's something for us to consider:

We'd like 75 BLT APR-UY &
We'd like 75 SSR APR-UY.

150 is enough for us - even w/ reallocations, I think we're good (unless they add a resort somewhere too good to resist.)

We might NEVER find that on the resale market. (currently subscribed to several mailing lists - including TSS

It'd be great if I could just say "Okay, I'll take this contract, aaaannnd *that* one!" -- Boom! Done.

But I'm guessing that 100 points are sooo common because DVC has set the $$pp incentives for $100 & $160. (I'd be willing to take 2 80-point contracts too, but those aren't much more common than the 75-point ones.

I can't imagine that we would buy direct ($18,750) $120 SSR, 130 BLT
Versus - high end resale - (12,825) $68 SSR, $103 BLT
Versus - low end resale - (11,850) $62 SSR, 96 BLT
We could get more than 300+ points resale SSR for that (Or TWICE what we're looking for.)

I think it all depends on your time frame needs. If you are not in a hurry, chances are good that a sub 100 contract will come around. lf you need to make travel plans soon, then yes, the speed and ease of a direct purchase might be worth it to you.
