What would cause a boom loud enough to shake your house?

OP, What was it?

When there was an accident at York International, a few years ago, we felt it at our house. I orginally thought some hit our house it was so strong and the house shook.

What part of Tennessee are you in? If you're in Western TN, the old Navy base at Millington is nearby. It's been closed for a few years now but they may still use it as a stopover, so the idea of a sonic boom is a good one. Also, that part of TN is along the New Madrid fault and earthquakes are definitely possible.

Meth lab exploded?

It actually happened here. Local thugs were using a small outbuilding to cook meth and it exploded.

It happened in the middle of the night a couple weeks ago, and I lept out of bed to rescue the kids. I was pretty sure the end of the world was near, and I was really mad at DH because he wasn't getting up to help. (He stayed in bed and laughed hysterically at me).

We weren't able to figure out what it was for sure, but signs pointed to lightning/thunder.

A few years ago I was renting an apartment about 3 miles from a local airport. It wasn't an "international" airport, but big planes came and went for Delta/Southwest regularly (Islip, MacArthur for those from Long Island). There is a curfew at the airport. I think all planes must be grounded by 11/11:30pm. Well around 2am I am awakened by a noise that I am SURE will be the sound that preceeds the apocolypse. The whole apartment/house shook, car alarms were going off in the street...it sounded like the sky itself was exploding. I even ran to the window and looked up (expecting to see a wrathfilled God peering down at me) and looked towards the direction NYC would be just in case the city had blown up (I was looking for the mushroom cloud).

Turns out that Delta was test firing a new jet engine. They had to pay some hefty fines for thatone. Luckily, I moved after that!

Do you live near a quarry? We experience the window rattling big boom whenever they blast the quarry with dynomite. First time I felt/heard it, I really thought it was an earthquake. I was very surprised to find out that they blast almost every day. I haven't worked since June, so that is the only reason I know they do it. Scares the crap out of me. But, the cats don't even budge, so I figure I'm safe.

Once, the fireworks factory about 10-15 miles away exploded and made my curtains blow out of my windows. That was a loud boom.
