Keeping an eye on Tropical Weather 2024

My heart goes out to everyone locally affected by this storm as well as everyone who has travel plans that will be impacted.

We are due to arrive Thurs 10/10 at MCO at 11 am. I am so conflicted on the best course of action. We can keep flight as is and hope for the best, move to a later Thursday flight, or just cancel the trip completely. We are returning home early on 10/14, so it was a short trip to begin with. But also an expensive trip - deluxe resort, 4 day park hoppers with LLMP and LLSP booked, MNSSHP on 10/11. My kids are in high school, and we unfortunately don't have much flexibility to reschedule.

In the grand scheme of things, I know this is just a vacation compared to people's lives being potentially upended. We live in Houston, so we understand the complexity of hurricanes. If impacts are minimal, we know that life can largely go on the next day. If impacts are bad, the last thing Orlando will need is a bunch of tourists arriving in the aftermath competing for resources.
Honestly, I don't think that flight goes out. I don't even think Thursday night goes out. MCO might not even be open on Thursday. On the bright side, I am fairly confident that flight would be canceled before Wednesday so you'll know and probably get all your money back with no change fees or cancelation fees since you fall into the window. Good luck on your decision. I know its hard

" Due to potential weather impacts to guest travel plans, change and cancellation fees imposed by Disney will be waived for check-in dates of Sunday, 10/6 – Saturday, 10/12.

If they impact is bad you’ll know before you depart, no reason to change your plans at this point unless you are worried the later fights will book out.

I’ve never been at WDW during a hurricane. Ive read lots f trips reports from those who have. Those reports were that there is a huge difference in being onsite at a hotel with interior corridors, lobby and connected restaurants and those with rooms with exterior doors and food courts. If going to be there, in particular at a value or moderate, I remember reports that by the time they tried to order water and some supplies, everything was gone. The advice was to get some supplies in several days ahead, and also not more than your family would need if on your own for a day or so.

Can you leave Tuesday or Wednesday morning and stay in a cheap hotel. I was there in August during that hurricane and lots of flights cancelled and it hit the panhandle not Tampa and Orlando only had heavy rain. Flight disruptions will most likely start happening on Wednesday. It’s not just weather it’s also air traffic control.

I plan to wait and make a call on Tuesday. If our Thursday PM flight is not possible, we will cancel the trip.

The concern I have is the wet ground with the rain over the next several days before the hurricane. Wet roots are dangerous for more trees falling.
I agree. I have a big oak tree in the front yard that has been stable through storms in the past, but this storm makes me nervous. I don’t want to be riding out the storm alone and a tree come down on the house . . . That is the main reason I want to evacuate.

What do they do with the Skyliner gondolas? Is there somewhere all the gondolas are stored on the ground level?

What day will WDW be closed because of the hurricane that will hit Orlando? Any threads on what is going to happen regarding parks/transportation.

No Hurricane is scheduled to hit Orlando as of today at 8 PM. Orlando is just within the possible Cone for Wednesday night to Thursday morning for possible rain or wind impact.

I thought I read they were closing Wednesday
No nothing posted about any park closures. They have only stopped allowing park reservations for non-dated tickets and AP holder.

I do hope people think about Helene and evacuate when they are told to do so this time and I pray that Milton does turn out to be less dangerous than predicted.
I hope so too, since our local news said it will definitely reach cat 4 and could reach cat 5 before landfall, although they do expect it to weaken a little to a cat 3 before it comes on shore. But that is a Helene scenario for sure, especially for the coast.

I now have a cleared lot with only a few sand pines that if they fall wouldn't hit the home.

I remember telling myself that even if a tree falls on my home, that's why I pay an insane amount of home insurance. Of course, it's based on risk tolerance, family and experience. I'm sure you're making the best decision given the circumstances. I've evacuated several times before, had no damage to our properties, and never regretted the decision.

It’s not about the cost, but about getting injured. Several people in Helene died from trees falling through their roof and killing them. I can’t sleep during a hurricane without earplugs to block the noise, so I would not hear any creaking or cracking sounds from the trees. There would also be no one to attempt any kind of first aid since I am riding out Milton alone.
