What will keep a 5 year old busy on the plane?

Read in this weekend's travel section that Continental Airlines does not allow DVD players, they say they interfere with communications.

We had a very old-fashioned (but top-notch) pediatrician who suggested we try Benadryl on our son for a long plane flight. We gave it to him an hour before departure, he bounced around and was a total pain during the three hour flight, then fell sound asleep on the rental car shuttle, snoozed away half the day then was up half the night. YEEECCCHHHH.

Books work.;) If your child can't read get a battery powered cassette player and a book on tape. Don't forget make sure it has the ding sound when you have to turn the page. Some don't.

Benadryl can make your child drowsy which is why a pediatrician would recommend it. But my MD also said to give a test dose on a non travel day first. Because the main side effect is hyperactivity, not what you want to discover in midair. Anyway, I think a 5 year old has reached an age of reason [or at least mine had!] Now a 2 year old, help! We have 5 children and we had long periods of time without travelling, usually when each child was 2.

That is SO funny that you would mention that....when the godkids were young we did that every time we were taking a plane and most of the time they slept right through...their DR gave us that idea! One trip I had a child behind me playing with play doh on the tray table.....and everytime they pushed down on it, pushed down to flatten it or anything like that my plane seat was moving from the pressure...by the end of the flight I was ready to leap over the seat and throw the playdoh out the woindow so I myself never let them bring that since I know firsthand how annoying that was when you are trying to relax and sleep during the flight.

I would think playdough would be very messy on the plane. When my DD plays with it at home there's always little pieces of it everywhere. I think a better option is the new Crayola modeling compound. Those little pieces don't come off, like it does with playdough.
