What were your assumptions about the world as a child?

So like Garp's toad waiting under water at Ocean surf to drown him????

As a child living in the California Mojave desert wilderness... every thing wanted to kill me for dinner

...that smoking and drinking beer made you very poor....as we where the only children sitting in the 1960s California taverns

not my assumption but a childhood friend thought that when her dad worked 'swing shift' it meant he had been 'good' at work and got to work on a playground with swings but if he misbehaved he had to work 'graves' and was assigned to work in the cemetary :rotfl: (in her defense-her dad worked at the navel shipyard which had neighborhoods with parks and swings as well as at least one military cemetary).

As a young kid through about middle school time frame, I always thought it was amazing that I was born AFTER all the wars had taken place and was so lucky to live in a peaceful world that would forever and always be peaceful. Though somehow at the same time I was also pretty worried about potential nuclear war with the USSR.

As a kid - I always wondered why ‘they’ didn’t just fly up and squeeze the clouds to make it rain during a draught.

sadly-that

1. psycho killers lurked around everywhere and nobody was safe from them,

and

2. assassinations were a common occurrence and were part of being involved in politics.

i know as an adult that this was entirely shaped by watching/hearing the nightly news as a young kid (reason I never let it be on when my kids were little) but there was just so much crazyness when I was a kid in the 60's and 70's-zodiac did 3 of his attacks/4 of his killings very close to my childhood home and I recognized the exact locations when they showed them REPEATEDLY on the news, the manson murders were all over the news (and we frequently visited family in southern california so then it felt scary as a kid to visit there). assisinations? I was too young to realize/remember jfk's but it was brought up constantly on the news, I certainly remember rfk, mlk, malcom x, milk and moscone and the attempts on wallace, reagan and ford:(
