Have you ever had someone tell your their child's name and wondered, "Where in the heck did they come up with that?". I have a hard time figuring out what to say.
"What an interesting name....."
Do you suppose it's hard on the kids? My father's name is Irp, my Grandpa's name was Irp - they called them Big Irp and Little Irpie. No kidding!!! My Dad says it was tough having an unusual name growing up.

A coworker and his wife just named their baby Atticus. I love the book but just don't like that name for a baby or child. I can't think of a nickname from it either.

If your parents give you a screwy name, you better either be VERY RICH or VERY GOOD LOOKING or a GREAT FIGHTER!

i feel so bad for some of the people i know with hard to pronounce names, things like Anders which is pronounced Awn ders (like last part of yawn)

Heck, yes. Especially people that name their kids corny things from movies like Anakin.

I often wonder if they are aware that sometimes names are a large sign on their kids saying "Beat me up and steal my lunch money."

What may be cute, unusual, or thought provoking to a parent can be a nightmare to a child.

I've been going through some old papers with lists of names and saw a person named Maudlin. :teeth: What the heck were that kid's parents thinking?

How would you feel if you found out you were named for your parents' favorite sports channel? Espen anyone?

I always wonder what my parents were thinnking. :scratchin My name isn't odd, I just hate it. Cindy. To me it's plain and boring and a little kid name.

Our second child (a girl) is due in November and we are having an awful time picking out a name. It's so tough. I don't want anything too unique or strange or a name that people won't be able to pronounce. I don't want a name that my poor child will be made fun of for either ;) but I also don't want a boring name!

I know two families with very strange names.

Family #1 - twin boys - named Bert and Ernie @@
Family #2 Last name Leer - named their daughter Chanda = Chanda Leer

I wonder that too ::yes::

My mom's name is Claudia and she has always told me how sad she was as a child because she could never find her name on printed items - mugs, keychains, etc.

This left a real impression on me, and therefore I named my kids traditional names so they could always find their names on things. I didn't want them to feel sad too :sad2:

To this day, my mom's name can't be found :sad2: My DH and I make it a point to always look, and if we should find it, which is basically never, we always buy it and give it to her. Most of the time it's something that she doesn't even want, but it still makes her smile :teeth:

That is so sweet that you look to see if you can find your mom's name on stuff! I used to hate that, too. My name was never on any of those things. my sisters could always find stuff (laura and elizabeth), but not me. Or I could, but it was never spelled the way my name is spelled. sigh. It used to make me sad as a kid. to this day I'll still glance thru stuff in gift shops just to check and see.

I have always gone by Cynthia. My mother insisted my name was NOT Cindy. When I was pregnant my DH and I were thinking about naming the baby Elvis if it was a boy. My father said absolutely NO and then proceeded to tell me about getting teased because his name is Irp. I guess it was a good thing we had a girl :teeth:

I think for every kid with an interesting name that wishes they had a normal name, there is a kid with a normal name wishing they had a interesting name.

Which is worse, to be the only Atticus in your class, or to be one of 7 girls named Jennifer.

Exactly. Often times kids grow into their more unusual names. Especially more old fashioned names. I never felt unique and special being a Jennifer. And yeah there were plenty of things with my name on it but generally they were sold out because my name was so popular.

Kids will find ways to make fun of someone's name or to give them a nickname no matter how hard the parents try to avoid that.

Both are just as bad. I would not want the most popular or unpopular name. There are many names in between to choose from.

There were four stephanie's in my homeroom in 7th grade. I've just always met so many Stephanie's everywhere that I get sick of my name.

On the other hand, one of my friends at my first school was named Mieka. It was so different, but everyone loved it and it totally fit her. As long as the names aren't totally out there, I think a different name is good most of the time.

My grandfather's name was James Lovic Lastname. For whatever reason he went by Lovic. :confused3 I have never ever heard that name on anyone else.

My name is Mona and I absolutely hate it. I could rarely find it on anything growing up either. My mom was offended when I told her a couple of weeks ago I didn't like my name.

I worked with a lady whose DH was James Odell ___ and everyone called him James or Jim except his wife. She always called him Odell. I thought that was so odd and an odd name. But, he was a very wonderful man and now his name just suits him. :)
