So the twins have been nonstop talking about coloring Easter Eggs.

I finally caved today. We went to the store after school and bought 18 Grade A Large Eggs.

But, because our family really doesn't eat hardboiled OR deviled eggs, I decided to be the winner mom and blow out the insides of the eggs to make a keish and just dye the shell.

And as I am pressing my lips to a vessel that came out of a chickens you-know-where, I thought to myself "Nothing says 'Welcome Home Jesus' like a chicken embryo oozing out of a shell"

To add to the grossness of it all, DD5 blurts out "Eeeww... it looks like yellow boogers!" Thanks, kid.

Now I am scrubbing my lips with anti-bacterial soap hoping that I don't end up in the ER tomorrow with a horrible case of Salmonella and trying to convince myself that I won't give up scrambled eggs for life.

:lmao:

Happy Easter, everyone.

Wow - you rock! Can't say I'd do that.
No one here eats hard boiled eggs either, so I will make deviled eggs out of them on Monday. (I know from past threads that the thought of deviled eggs to some is as gross or worse than blowing chicken embryos:lmao: Sorry!)

SHHHHHHH!

Don't remind my son about the whole egg dyeing thing. I think I may get out of it this year.

:rotfl2: Did you blow out all 18 of them?? If so, how long did that take you? My kids will eat some hardboiled eggs and they will eat egg salad, but we have SO many eggs that I'm not sure that they will get through all of them!

I went and bought 4-18 count Grade AA eggs and then boiled 3 of the packages...... YES, 4.5 dozen eggs!! And let the kids color them all! But we have 4 kids and wanted them to be able to do more than 3 eggs each! Also, we give eggs to my Mom and Dad so won't be keeping them all... I will call my Dad tomorrow and offer up more since he LOVES them and can eat 12 in one sitting!!

 *Shows how much you love your kids! What a good mom!*

It only took 40 minutes or so. It wasn't bad.

But the Quiche I was going to make is now much less appealing than it once was...

Wait a minute . . . are people saying that they eat the eggs after they colour them? Is that safe?

We always did when we were kids and I'm still alive and kicking! Though now you couldn't get me to touch a hardboiled egg unless it's right out of the fridge and cold again! No lukewarm eggs for me!

Do you store them in the fridge? How many days after the fact do you eat them? I know that we dyed eggs with our Sunday School on Monday. So that's a full week before Easter. I can't imagine eating eggs after that time, let alone ones with dye in them.

We always eat the colored hard-boiled eggs. No biggie, really.

If you are going to eat your dyed eggs, you might want to read these tips:

From: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Fact_Sheets/Focus_On_Shell_Eggs/index.asp

Are Easter Eggs Safe?
Sometimes eggs are decorated, used as decorations, and hunted at Easter. Here are some safety tips for Easter eggs.
Dyeing eggs: After hard cooking eggs, dye them and return them to the refrigerator within 2 hours. If eggs are to be eaten, use a food-safe coloring. As with all foods, persons dyeing the eggs should wash their hands before handling the eggs.

Blowing out eggshells: Because some raw eggs may contain Salmonella, you must use caution when blowing out the contents to hollow out the shell for decorating, such as for Ukranian Easter eggs. Use only eggs that have been kept refrigerated and are uncracked. To destroy bacteria that may be present on the surface of the egg, wash the egg in hot water and then rinse in a solution of 1 teaspoon chlorine bleach per half cup of water. After blowing out the egg, refrigerate the contents and use within 2 to 4 days.

Hunting Eggs: Hard-cooked eggs for an egg hunt must be prepared with care to prevent cracking the shells. If the shells crack, bacteria could contaminate the inside. Eggs should be hidden in places that are protected from dirt, pets, and other sources of bacteria. The total time for hiding and hunting eggs should not exceed 2 hours. The "found" eggs must be re-refrigerated and eaten within 7 days of cooking.

I know what you mean. My kids don't eat hard boiled eggs so I've been blowing the crap out of them for years. And boy do your lips hurt after blowing on 18 eggs. The first time I got the great idea, I thought my lips were going to stay in the puckered position forever. But I do love the way they come out and we get to keep them out longer.

It's basically a food coloring/vinegar (or water) mixture. If you have ever eaten birthday cake from a grocery store, it's the same exact thing.

We don't eat hard boiled eggs, but I'm sure that if you dyed them, you'd be perfectly safe.

My last case of food poisoning was Easter a few years back. Bad potato salad. Probably stored near pets, dirt or "other" bacteria.

Please don't tell me it was chicken butt bacteria...

We have been dying at least a dozen eggs per year for the last 30+ years in my family and we have never had a case of food poisoning....and that included the Easter Bunny hiding those eggs before we got up and us finding them so that means they were out for a few hours anyway. I'm not promoting leaving them out in the warm house but just saying what we did. Now we do the same with our kids but I do end up tossing them or giving them to a sibling because we don't eat hard boiled eggs in this house :scared: We plan on dying them either Friday or Saturday before Easter. We did have the 1 year we didn't find an egg :confused3 Not sure if they ever came across it either  :scared: I keep notes on where they are so we don't have that happen

wouldn't that be a horrible waste not to eat them?!

I am used to eating eggs purchased fresh from my landlady - complete with some additional adornment still on the shell
