What Was Your Wedding Song and Why?

Ours was a folk song, Roseville Fair, by Bill Staines. Nancy Griffith also has it on one of her albums.

Oh, the night was clear and the stars were shinin'
The moon came up so quiet in the sky
All the people gathered round; the band was tunin'
I can hear them now playin' "Comin' Through the Rye"

You were dressed in blue and you looked so lovely
A gentle flower of a small town girl
You took my hand and we stepped to the music
With a single smile you became my world

And we danced all night to the fiddle and the banjo
Their drifting tunes seemed to fill the air
So long ago and we still remember
When we fell in love at the Roseville Fair

We courted well; we courted dearly
And we'd rock for hours in the front porch chair
Then a year went by from the time I met you
And I made you mine at the Roseville Fair

And we danced all night to the fiddle and the banjo
Their drifting tunes seemed to fill the air
So long ago and we still remember
When we fell in love at the Roseville Fair

So here's a song for all of the lovers
Here's a tune that they can share
May they dance all night to the fiddle and the banjo
The way we did at the Roseville Fair
May they dance all night to the fiddle and the banjo
The way we did at the Roseville Fair

We had no song for our wedding - DW has always hated the whole wedding song/first dance concept. But for our 10th anniversary, we had Elvis remarry us out in Vegas (great fun - highly recommend) with Can't Help Falling in Love for our Rewedding Song.

Our song was "Grow Old With Me", written by John Lennon and sung by Mary Chapin Carpenter.

Grow old along with me
The best is yet to be
When our time has come
We will be as one
God bless our love
God bless our love
Grow old along with me
Two branches of one tree
Face the setting sun
When the day is done
God bless our love
God bless our love
Spending our lives together
Man and wife together
World without end
World without end
Grow old along with me
Whatever fate decrees
We will see it through
For our love is true
God bless our love
God bless our love

We're not very religious, but thought the sentiment fit what we wanted for us.

How cute! We honeymooned in Vegas, and I thought it would have been neat to have a Vegas wedding. Very cheesy, but kinda cool too. We will have to do the remarriage thing one day. :)

I love this thread!

We had two songs in a way. Our offical first dance - The One by Elton John. We got engaged on a beach in Maine and I loved the waves crashing in the background. We also liked the instrumental bridge. And the words were perfect. Our last song was "Wonderful Tonight" by Clapton - it was the ONLY thing DH asked for the entire wedding planning - that to be the LAST song and for us to leave immediately after. And we did - soon to be 13 years ago!

The One by Elton John

I saw you dancing out the ocean
Running fast along the sand
A spirit born of earth and water
Fire flying from your hands

In the instant that you love someone
In the second that the hammer hits
Reality runs up your spine
And the pieces finally fit

And all I ever needed was the one
Like freedom fields where wild horses run
When stars collide like you and I
No shadows block the sun
You're all I've ever needed
Baby you're the one

There are caravans we follow
Drunken nights in dark hotels
When chances breathe between the silence
Where sex and love no longer gel

For each man in his time is Cain
Until he walks along the beach
And sees his future in the water
A long lost heart within his reach

My DH gave each of my kids "their" song. My DD - Kayleigh by Marillion: He heard the song and loved the name, insisted any daughter would be named Kayleigh. My DS - "With Arms Wide Open" by Creed (After I found out I was pregnant with twins I heard this song and it makes me cry every time I hear it)

Okay I am getting misty...

Annie's Song by John Denver :cloud9:
We had Annie's Song sung right before the ceremony. (John Denver concert was the first time DH asked me out)

My FIL wrote special lyrics to Eidelweiss, from Sound of Music. That was really touching.

Our first dance was to Dan Fogelberg's Longer, just because we liked it.

Longer than there’ve been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there’ve been stars up in the heavens
I’ve been in love with you.

Stronger than any mountain cathedral
Truer than any tree ever grew
Deeper than any forest primeval
I am in love with you.

I’ll bring fires in the winters
You’ll send showers in the springs
We’ll fly through the falls and summers
With love on our wings.

Through the years as the fire starts to mellow
Burning lines in the book of our lives
Though the binding cracks and the pages start to yellow
I’ll be in love with you.

Longer than there’ve been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there’ve been stars up in the heavens
I’ve been in love with you
I am in love with you.. :sunny:

Ours was Endless Love, because of the "my first love" line (we were HS sweethearts.)

I don't really remember why we settled on that one though. Lots of songs mentioned here were in the running, including Annie's Song (my name is Annie) Maybe I'm Amazed (dh wrote the lyrics out for me in one of the first love notes he ever sent me) and Longer (just because I liked it.)

Probably my mom picked it in the end, she planned everything else :rotfl: .

Our song was "From this Moment"-Shania Twain. We just knew when we heard it that is was our song.

(I do swear that I'll always be there. I'd give anything
and everything and I will always care. Through weakness
and strength, happiness and sorrow, for better, for worse,
I will love you with every beat of my heart.)

From this moment life has begun
From this moment you are the one
Right beside you is where I belong
From this moment on

From this moment I have been blessed
I live only for your happiness
And for your love I'd give my last breath
From this moment on

I give my hand to you with all my heart
Can't wait to live my life with you, can't wait to start
You and I will never be apart
My dreams came true because of you

From this moment as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing I wouldn't give
From this moment on

You're the reason I believe in love
And you're the answer to my prayers from up above
All we need is just the two of us
My dreams came true because of you

From this moment as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing I wouldn't give
From this moment
I will love you as long as I live
From this moment on

This was ours too. I just love this song. We used the duet version.

Our wedding song was "Could I have this Dance for the Rest of my Life" by Anne Murray. We picked it because we didn't have a song that we felt strongly about and we liked the theme of it.

Ours was the Etta James version of At Last. I chose it after Celine Dion woke me out of a sound sleep one night, singing it on Jay Leno. I hadn't heard it before, but then I found the Etta version and I fell in love with it. And it was appropriate, as we were together about 10 years before we got married! :teeth:

This would have been my second choice...All I Ask of You from the Phantom of the Opera--these lyrics are from Barbra Streisand's version if they look different. (?) I think this is a beautiful song...DH just didn't want a Broadway musical song.

(I LOVE Annie's Song. Love, love, love it. Wish I'd thought of that!!)

No more talk of darkness,
Forget these wide-eyed fears.
I’m here, nothing can harm you
My words will warm and calm you.
Let me be your freedom,
Let daylight dry your tears.
I’m here, with you, beside you,
To guard you and to guide you . . .
Then say you love me every winter morning,
Turn my head with talk of summertime . . .
Say you need me with you, now and always . . .
Promise me that all you say is true
That’s all I ask of you . . .
Let me be your shelter,
Let me be your light.
You’re safe: no-one will find you
Your fears are far behind you . . .
All I need is freedom,
A world that’s warm and bright
And you always beside me
To hold me and to hide me . . .
Then say you’ll share with me
One love, one lifetime . . .
Let me lead you from your solitude . . .
Say you need me with you here, beside you . . .
Anywhere you go,let me go too
That’s all I ask of you . . .
Say the word and I will follow you...
Share each day with me, each night, each morning . . .
Say you feel the way I do
That’s all I ask of you . . .
Anywhere you go let me go too . . .
Love me -that’s all I ask of you . .

I love love love this thread...so many great songs! Ours was You're the Inspiration by Chicago:

You know our love was meant to be

The kind of love that lasts forever

And I want you here with me

From tonight until the end of time

You should know, everywhere I go

You're always on my mind, in my heart,

In my soul

(Chorus)

You're the meaning in my life

You're the inspiration

You bring feeling to my life

You're the inspiration

I wanna have you near me

I wanna have you hear me saying

No one needs you more that I need you

And I know, yes I know that it's plain to see

We're so in love when we're together

Now I know that I need you here with me

And for the last song...The Carpenters...We've Only Just Begun!

Forgot the Lyrics:

LOST IN YOUR EYES (Debbie Gibson)

I get lost, in your eyes
And I feel my spirits rise
And soar like the wind
Is it love that I am in?
I get weak in a glance
Isn't this what's called romance?
And that's what I know
Cause when I'm lost
I can't let go

(Chorus)
I don't mind
Not knowing what I'm headed for
You can take me to the skies
It's like being lost in heaven
When (and) I'm lost in your eyes

I just felt
Don't know why
Something is there
We can't deny
Ooh, when I first knew
Was when I first looked at you
And if I
Can't find my way
If salvation
Seems miles away
Oh, I'll be found
When I'm lost in your eyes

(Repeat Chorus) I get weak in a glance
Isn't this what's called romance
Oh, I'll be found
When I am lost
In your eyes.

DH best man sang "Cross My Heart" bu George Strait during the ceremony.

1st wedding party dance - "You've Got A Friend" by James Taylor

But most special was our first dance - Tracy Byrd's "Keeper of the Stars" Can you see the country theme here :rotfl:

The Keeper Of The Stars
(Dickey Lee/Danny Mayo/Karen Staley)

It was no accident me finding you
Someone had a hand in it
Long before we ever knew
Now I just can't believe you're in my life
Heaven's smilin' down on me
As I look at you tonight

I tip my hat to the keeper of the stars
He sure knew what he was doin'
When he joined these two hearts
I hold everything
When I hold you in my arms
I've got all I'll ever need
Thanks to the keeper of the stars

Soft moonlight on your face oh how you shine
It takes my breath away
Just to look into your eyes
I know I don't deserve a treasure like you
There really are no words
To show my gratitude

So I tip my hat to the keeper of the stars
He sure knew what he was doin'
When he joined these two hearts
I hold everything
When I hold you in my arms
I've got all I'll ever need
Thanks to the keeper of the stars

It was no accident me finding you
Someone had a hand in it
Long before we ever knew

"Valentine" by Martina McBride and some pianist whose name escapes me. But he is a famous one and I wish I could think of his name right now! He just put out an album of Disney classics.

If there were no words, no way to speak I would still hear you.
If there were no tears, no way to feel inside I'd still feel for you.
And even if the sun refused to shine, even if romance ran out of rhyme..
You would still have my heart until the end of time.
You're all I need, my love, my valentine.

All of my life, I have been waiting for all you give to me.
You've opened my eyes and showed me how to love unselfishly.
I've dreamed of this a thousand times before, but in my dreams
I couldn't love you more.
I will give you my heart until the end of time.
You're all I need my love, my valentine.

And even if the sun refused to shine, even if romance ran out of rhyme,
you would still have my heart until the end of time.
You're all I need, my love my valentine.

We picked it because DH likes the pianist and we had decided to get married on Valentine's Day. But only because DH refused to get married on Halloween, like I suggested. Yeah I know..I'm weird. I'd always dreamed of getting married in a black lace gown and walking down the aisle to an instrumental version of the theme from "The Addams Family". :teeth:

Jim Brickman is the pianist!! Wonderful, wonderful romantic pianist.

Our song was/is "When I See You Smile" by Bad English. Everytime we kissed this song seemed to come up on the radio, so it had to have a part in our wedding. Even now, 15 years later, if we are out on a date it seems to be played. :lovestruc

I was a professional singer at the time frog and I were married. Since I didn't want to try and sing the songs live at the wedding I taped it. I had 3 (other than the wedding march of course)
Desperado (which describes my husband to a T) by the Eagles
The Woman In Me ...By Shania Twain
Two Sparrows in a Hurricain ... By Tanya Tucker.

The reason behind all these songs is a very long story synopsis
Frog and I both told each other that we never wanted to marry again.
Changed our minds but didn't tell the other.
Tried to run each other off.
Finally told each other that we wanted to get married. Then did. We literally felt like 2 sparrows in a hurricain during our courtship :lmao:
