What was your last unexpected bill?

$1300 for in-home nursing services. This was prescribed by my surgeon and approved by my insurance. It's run through the same hospital group as my surgeon, anesthesiologist, physical therapy, orthopedist, the hospital itself... all these charges were in-network and covered by my insurance. For some reason the in-home nursing service is considered out of network... but they are all NL/EMMC providers! I am going to have to check into this, as that $1300 was for visits during a 9 day period in June, and I have had more visits since then! I am just mystified how everything else through NL/EMMC is considered in-network but this is not. Heck, my $70K+ surgery only cost $225!!!

A new alternator for the RV. Couldn't believe how expensive that was.

Our puppy broke her leg last week and required surgery to put a in a plate. The cost was astronomical and we are now considering pet insurance!

Poor pup! Get the insurance....took me a long time to come around to it, but after huge, huge bills for my Airedale last summer (2 MRIs to the tune of 10K....plus lots more for bloodwork, hospitalization...etc), we purchased pet insurance for our youngest dog, age 5....before there's too much wrong with her. It would have paid for itself 25x over in my older dogs, but they're uninsurable at this point. Specialty/emergency veterinary care costs have skyrocketed in the last few years as private equity firms have purchased many of these facilities....it's just insane.

About $2,500 out of pocket medical for DH's needed/medical procedure/hospital stay.

Today. $30 to have a nail removed from a tire and the tire patched.

Last week our second refrigerator in the garage died. It was over 20 years old so we cannot complain.

I highly recommend Trupanion. They have saved me thousands of dollars and their payout is within two or three days.

Last November. I hadn’t been to a Dr in over ten years and I was getting considerable pressure to go get a checkup from family and co-workers. “Your insurance covers one annual visit”, they said. I saw an aide for ten minutes. She told me I was fat and had high blood pressure. She sent me for blood work. Spent ten minutes at the facility. Results said I was fat and had high blood pressure.

$1,020

Last week, we had to pay $3200 for a new catalytic converter plus a rental car for a week (one car family). Thankfully the car had the decency to die the day after the 17 hour drive home from Florida rather than leaving us stranded somewhere along I-95.

Ouch! Thanks for the heads up! Fellow Mainer here, and that’s my local hospital.

Not truly unexpected, but paying out of pocket for my daughter’s mental health care. Options are non existent with insurance.
 I understand. And although this won't likely make you feel much better about it, just know the situation is very similar here, even with our public health care system. Here in one of the largest cities in the nation (not somewhere isolated with access issues), the wait-list for meaningful care is months and months and months long. OOP services can be bought within hours $$$.

There is a shortage of dorms at my son’s college and he’s an incoming freshman. The college asked him to list his top 4 dorms in order of preference at the time he signed up for housing. He was placed in one of the most expensive dorms on campus, which wasn’t on his list. It will cost an additional $2,400 this year for his dorm. It has a beautiful living room and kitchen, but he’s also required to have the full meal plan.

Last year, we had a pipe break under the garage floor - $15,700. We've had more recent expenses (car repairs, medical bills, etc.), but none of those were as completely unexpected as the darn plumbing bill!
