What was your best vacation in the U.S. ....

When our kids were about 9 and 12, were headed south from Maine. Spent several days in Washington D.C., seeing all the 'sights'. Then went to King's Dominion in VA, meeting up with a dear niece. Finally, we spent a week in a hotel on the beach on Hatteras Island.

When I was a kid we drove up to Maine, from Mass. to spend 2 weeks at the camp of an aunt and uncle, several summers. This was in the late 50's and early 60's and the interstate highway didn't go all the way so it was about a 10 hour drive. The camp was very rustic but 10 feet from the water and we had a ball. We always made a trip to Acadia National park while we were there. 20+ years later, DH and I and our kids moved to within an hour of the camp and we were given unlimited access, until they sold the camp. (it looked exactly like it did years earlier.)

I couldn't name a favorite one because I love seeing new places and things, especially scenic and historic sites. We also love traveling to see our favorite sports teams and seeing games in as many new Major League Baseball parks as possible.

Some of the publicity about the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service has piqued our interest in seeing more of those parks. We loved Rocky Mountain National Park and the Colorado Springs area last summer. We are looking forward to our Alaska cruise in July and are talking about which national parks to visit next.

Welcome to the community board WisBlue! :welcome:

We love all the national parks and can't wait to see more of them!

Thanks for the welcome, but it isn't as if I have never posted here before.

I just have been checking it out more often because more threads are being moved here.

This one caught my eye because we are constantly thinking and talking about new places to visit.

I am also constantly thinking about new places to visit. Exploring is a blast!

I took a road trip with my husband to see a bunch of the national parks. We hit Yellowstone, Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, the Badlands, etc.

I reaaally want to do this when my kids are a little older.

Started in Las Vegas. Then spent days at Grand Canyon, followed by Bryce Canyon, then a couple days at Zion. Then back to Las Vegas. Amazing sites both natural and manmade.
Then there was that one particular week I spent in Las Vegas.

A whole WEEK in Vegas? Amazing you survived.

Back in the mid 1980s, I had a month off between jobs. I flew to California and spent three weeks there and in Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. A friend accompanied me for a week, but the rest of the time I was alone.

I'm at Universal now, and this is MUCH better than any Disney trip I've ever had.
This is what I want to do next. Even though we have been to all these places separately I want to go back to visit all of them. But being from the East Coast it would be better to do in one trip. Problem would be deciding whether to do more time in Vegas or California...lol..Have a feeling a few days at the Grand Canyon would be enough. Driving down Route 66...

If you do this sort of a trip, don't just see the Grand Canyon and check that area off your list. There are a bunch of other national parks in that area that we enjoy as much or more than the Grand Canyon. (Bryce, Zion, Arches, Canyonlands).

Too hard to pick just one! My favorites, in no particular order:

Any trip, whether it be with our camper or staying in hotels, to the upper peninsula of Michigan. So beautiful up there. The waterfalls, lighthouses, slower pace of living, etc.

Our three trips to the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area. I'm ready to go back again!

Our trip to Florida in January 2001. It wasn't our first trip there, but we spent 4 nights at the Contemporary Resort at WDW and followed that up with a 7-night Disney Magic cruise and followed that up with another week in Florida to visit family and sightsee. It was to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary.

Big extended Family Adventures:
A tie between
*11 days on Maui (Molokini Crater snorkel trip, luau, parasailing, horseback riding trip, golf)
*11 days on Kauai & Oahu (snorkeling, river kayak trip, zip lining, golf, Pearl Harbor, Waikiki Beach catamaran sail, Diamond Head)
*9 days in Sedona & the Grand Canyon (Verde Valley Indian Ruins, Blazin M Chuckwagon Dinner, Verde River tubing, Pink Jeep Tour, golf, Flagstaff Indian ruins, Ranger talks in the Grand Canyon) Best thing about this trip - We drove in to Sedona at night. The next morning I got to see DS17's and DD15's jaws drop when they saw the red rock formations. They kept saying they felt like they were IN the Cars movie!

Best husband & wife trip:
DH won a work trip - 5 days at the Four Seasons in Jackson Hole, Wy The meals were fantastic, cocktail hour was at the top of the mountain up the ski gondola, a float trip on the Snake River, a wild animal safari...it was all incredible!

10 days onsite at the Schlitterbahn Water Park in New Braunfels Texas. We were from the West and had never been to Texas. We loved the water park! We wandered all over Central Texas from the Alamo in San Antonio to the Congress Ave (Bat) Bridge in Austin with many points in between. We explored underground caverns, went Tubin on the Comal River ate as much BBQ as we could get our hands on and had an encounter with an ostrich.

We now live in Austin, TX - never in my wildest dreams when we returned from the best vacation EVER (yep, it topped Disney) did I imagine that 5 years later we would move to Central Texas. We are now a little over an hours drive from Schlitterbahn and visit a few times every summer.

Assateague Island. The most relaxed I've ever seen my DH, playing with our grandchildren, not caring about the rest of the world. Making memories with them and our entire family every summer.
