I routinely take the 5:45am flight out of DCA when heading out West for vacation because it means I can arrive at my destination by 10am (connection) and have a full day. Lines are shorter / non-existent and there is no traffic on the road that early. I really prefer taking the early flight even if the price is higher.
Biggest tip is to pack your bags a full day before so you are not staying up late doing last minute packing. Leave the bags open and just trow in your toiletries the morning of. There is nothing like staying up til 1am packing only to have to wake up at 4am for a 6am flight.
