ok - someone tell me........

My DH has agreed to make me a scrap island in my hobby room out of the white cubes I bought.

I plan to have 4 on each end (2 stacks of 2 high) and a big white tabletop over them.

What do I use for the table top part? Anyone have any suggestions? I know nothing about this ....just know it has to be smooth.

I asked him what my options are and he said he doesn't know..:scared1:...but once I figure it out, he'll be happy to get it and make it happen.:thumbsup2

Can someone tell me what you used? thanks

A plastic table with folding legs makes a good lightweight table top, and it can be used elsewhere if needed. Another option is a hollow core door from Lowe's.

My DH made me a simliar table. We used a folding plastic table we got from Costco for the top. It works great, great for cutting on easy to clean.

How much are you willing to spend? How about the top that was made for the cubes.

You can get it at Create for Less for a reasonable price.

Counter top is a great choice! Barring that, I designed a table top for my workspace and had it cut from a single sheet of birch faced plywood. DH assembled it, sanded and stained it. It could have used a couple more coats with sanding between, because the grain raised a little, but it's virtually indestructable.

Mine has cubbies underneath, which add stability and strength and store my most used items:

PS unless it is two sided or you're planning on storing stuff along the back edge, 3 feet might be a whisker too wide for comfort.

Hey Linda! Thanks! I really (*REALLY*) liked your cubbies underneath.

This is going to be an island in the middle of a room. So it will have seating on both sides so either my DD can join me or a friend....or she can have her friends over to do crafts.

I'm sure you can get a laminate countertop made to your specifcations at HD or Lowe's. They can finish it on all sides, just like a kitchen island countertop. They might even have certain sizes in stock.

Ask if they have any returns for less money. You can also ask at kitchen places and see if they have any scraps big enough for your project.

They sell white tops where they sell the cubes but I am thinki it is not as wide as you would like. At Michaels the other day I found a booklet with many different ides how to make a craft room/desk organized with all the directions as to which pieces they used.

no, it isn't wide enough and also, I don't want any seams. I know I sound very picky about this , and I am, but if we're going to do this just once, I want to do it right.

We did go to Home Depot last night to look around.

I'm not in a rush to decide so I want to look around a bit more.

if you would like for me to draw you a plan for your table top, complete with layout of cubbies underneath (which can go straight through to be two sided) assembly instructions and parts list, pm me your email addy and desired dimensions. You can always get the laminate to apply to the top with contact cement.
