What to serve with ham for a crowd?

When we have ham for parties we always do, Green Beans Almondine. We have been leaving out the almonds because of my sons nut allergy.
Also, for potatoes we use the can potatoes, the full round ones, put them in the oven with butter and garlic and it is always a hit, with kids all ages.

Now you are making me want ham:)

We always do cheesy potatoes with ham. They can be made ahead and frozen to be cooked and served later. Another great addition is escalloped pineapple.

Pineapple soufflé Goes great with ham! I can share my recipe if you want.:goodvibes

I'd do cheesy something, potatoes, mac & cheese, something cheesy. I love green bean casserole with ham.

cheesy potatoes, fruit salad, green salad, and some broccoli with lemon and pepper.

We always have Whipped Cream Potatoes with ham. They are absolutely delicious and it needs to be made the day before which makes for less cooking on the day of the party.

Whipped Cream Potatoes

Russet potatoes
Half and Half
Butter
Salt and Pepper

Parboil the potatoes. We make 5 lbs which will fill two 9 x 13 pans (mostly make for family gatherings so we need alot--could easily be cut in half).
When cool, peel skin off, and shred.

Pour half and half over shredded potatoes until they are barely covered. It's OK to see potatoes popping through the half and half. Dot with butter (1 stick should do it for a 9 x 13 pan). Salt and pepper to taste.

Cover and put in refrigerator for 8 to 16 hours.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Put potatoes in oven uncovered and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour and top is browned.

You can pull the potatoes out of the fridge earlier and bring up to room temperature, but you will need to adjust the baking time down a bit.

corn pudding? Granted, it is served warm usually, but I have eaten room temp and enjoyed it :thumbsup2 It is easy to make, easy clean up and not too expensive :worship:
Corn Pudding:

pre-heat oven to 350

1 can corn (drained)
1 can creamed corn
2 eggs (not beaten)
1/2 stick melted butter
8 oz sour cream
1 box jiffy corn muffin mix

mix all together in large bowl

spray casserole dish with cooking spray

pour mix into dish, bake uncovered for 30/35 minutes...top should be golden

My DM use to let us have anything we wanted for our birthday dinner. I always chose ham, mac and cheese, fordhook lima beans, and rice with the juice from the ham. I would be so full from eating all that I wouldn't want any of my birthday cake. I fix that same meal with a few additions for every major meal we do.

Just a note that vegans do not eat milk or cheese, or other animal products.

I would do a big pan of mac n cheese. Then, green beans.

A green salad. Then maybe ask for ideas for additional vegan items. Maybe, hummus with veggies to dip it into?

The thread seems light on the vegan dishes! Heh.

A nice rice pilaf thing with nuts and currants or some dried fruit in.

Grilled fruit is always nice - you can do kabobs or grill half peaches, pears, slices of pineapple, etc. - If you do something like this, first CLEAN the grill or pan thoroughly and then keep it separate for the fruit.

Tabouleh salad is nice and refreshing.

I really like acorn squash stuffed with sweet potato. You just roast some yams (if you can find Garnet Yams, totally preferable), then mash the guts with some salt, pepper, cinnamon, tiny bit of oil.

Halve acorn squash, slice the bottoms flat but so they're still solid. Scoop the seeds and all, fill with mashed yam, bake for like 40 or so minutes. With 15 or so left, glaze with maple syrup, spiced if you like. Do NOT use honey for vegan dishes.

Lots of other squashes are great roasted.

Roasted root veg is a great dish - just cut up a bunch of root veg (rutabega, turnip, carrot, parsnip, celeria, whatever's handy), trim a load of brussel sprouts, some cippolini onions, whatev... toss lightly with olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and roast in a hot oven for like 30 minutes on baking sheets, not too crowded.

Serve with rice - brown and wild, mixed, is nice, or couscous with some lemon squeezed on.

Also a nice veggie platter with hummus, olives, pita chips, etc.

For dessert you can do a baked fruit crumble if you didn't do grilled, or a chocolate cake or whatever.

Baked sweet potatoes or casserole, mac and cheese, hot/cold, green bean casserole, scalloped potato casserole, potato salad, corn casserole, raw veggie platter w/dip

PINEAPPLE SOUFFLE
1 stick butter
1 c. sugar
4 eggs
5 slices of bread, crumbled
1 (20 oz.) can crushed pineapple, drained
Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, 1 at a time. Mix well. Stir in bread cubes. Add pineapple. Pour into souffle dish and garnish with brown sugar and (or) pineapple slices and maraschino cherries. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

You could bake this the day before and then just warm it back up in the oven before serving.

I think I'm missing something - how does that souffle? Are you meant to separate the eggs? Seems heavy though regardless.... Confused?

A number of the churches in our area do a 'ham and bean dinner' as a fundraiser/fellowship thing. They usually all serve ham, potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, rolls & butter and desert (either strawberry shortcake or pie, depending on the season).

At home, I serve ham for Easter and Christmas, and I always serve the following sides: my homemade macaroni & cheese, sliced pineapple, harvard beets, green beans, corn, rolls & butter and desert (usually pie and ice cream)

The bread absorbes the fluid and it is lighter than it sounds after it's baked. There are many recipes online for pineapple soufflé. Some sounded even heavier and more sugary.

I get rave reviews and always come home with an empty dish when I take this to potlucks. I also cut up some extra bread cubes and sauté them in butter to sprinkle over the top before baking.

Try these Quinoa and Sweet Potato cakes. Someone brought these to a potluck and I really liked them. (I'm not a vegan nor do I have food allergies. That's how good they were, lol.) They can be made ahead and are vegan, gluten-, milk- and dairy-free if you use the appropriate other ingredients like the Salsa.

Given my druthers, I like scalloped potatoes and sauteed green beans with ham. Corn is good, too.

ambrosia salad, and either green bean casserole or broc. casserole.

A couple of more vegan ideas for you. Saute some veggies, I do mine in olive oil and garlic, just cut up some veggies and whip it up before hand. These taste good warm or room temp. You can also toss them with some balsamic vinegar after they cool for a sort of wilted salad.
Roasted potatoes cooked with onion soup mix, I add mushrooms, onions and whatever else I think might taste good, mix it with the soup mix and olive oil and roast as directed. Again, these can be served hot or cold and I feel they taste better the day after so they can be made ahead of time. :)
Broccoli salad, I finely chop broccoli, red onion, cabbage, really whatever veggies sound good, then I add in some cheese and Ranch, mix it all together and sprinkle sunflower seeds on top, it's very good! You can also do this using a balsamic dressing, I do that when my BFF who is dairy free comes over, it is very good. Just leave the cheese out and you're good. :)
