What to say when a friend picks an awful name for their baby?

Everyone thought I was strange for naming my daughter Ryan. It never bothered me what other people said. I liked it and that's all that mattered. When I had my second child, I wanted another girl and wanted to name her Randy, but I ended up with a boy and he is Dustin or Dusty as he is called.

I like strong sounding names for girls. I'm not sure about the first name but the "James" I like. I used a feminine name for DD's middle name (to go with "strong" first name) and many negative comments were made. I would never say anything negative to someone for giving their child a 'fluffy' name I don't care for like Heather or Melissa etc. It is just rude. Not sure why people feel like they have to comment.

How about Cameron Rhys and Rylee? Bet you are wondering what the problem is - nice boys names aren't they. Well these are my two great nieces! Even at 3 if she is called Cameron, Cami will respond that her name is Cami and that Cameron is a boy's name and she is a girl! And no their parents didn't want boys.

You would have thought that we named him Obidiah Babblejack

What - you were trying to steal my DS's name???  ;)

I would never say anything.... we had A LOT of comments about our DD's name from my SIL - said she would never "rise above being a secretary"..... I told her, "do you have any idea what a good secretary earns in a year? Cause it's way more than you do...." DD is graduating from HS and attending Pitt to study psychology.....:teeth:

Wouldn't say anything. It's their kid and they can name her whatever they want.

I read something once about the names of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore's daughters: Rumer is named for a British poet named Rumer Godden (female); "Scout" is the heroine of the book "To Kill A Mockingbird" (also female); Tallulah is named for the actress Tallulah Bankhead, best known for the Alfred Hitchcock movie "Lifeboat" (1944).

Personally, I like different names. My name also happens to be original (Carlen) so I've always been partial to original names.

Just thought I'd t hrow this in:

Talullah is a Native American name which means "running water."

Got that from babynames.com

A woman my mom knows, just named her daughter "Story." as in a storybook.

There is a famous astronaut named Story.

They call Demi and Bruce's dd Lou-Lou for short. Not too bad, or she will be Tally or Lou. Just think how a 40 year old business woman is going to sound as Talullah! I wish people would remember when they do these cutesy names that the child will grow up some day.

I must admit my eyebrows raised when my cousin told me what she named her baby twins just last week. They are Florence Rose and Ida Marie. The first thing that came to mind was how they are going to sound out of place in the nursing home 75 years from now sitting amongst the Ashley's, Tiffany's, Kylie's, and Brittany's! :hyper:

I happen to like the name;) But if I didn't I wouldn't say anything to the parents.

I know a woman named Kevin spelled Kevyn

If she asked, then I would have been truthful. I think it is too late now to say anything though. My neighbor asked me what I thought of the name Kennedy for a girl that she was having. I told her it made me think of Ted Kennedy and I thought it was a horrible name for a girl or boy! It would have been even more horrible paired with their italian last name. So she dropped that name and when with Elizabeth. :D
