What to say when a friend picks an awful name for their baby?

I don't care for the name but I wouldn't say anything it will hurt their feelings

Most importantly that pooooor child has to deal with it. Even common names get picked on, this poor child is going to cringe during every roll call... that is if she doesn't go to school with Demi Moore and John Travolta's kids!

I predict she nicknames herself Jamie.

If I don't like the name, I just keep quiet. It is her name to give. I think that name is kinda cute, although I wouldn't name my daughter that.

I have a friend whose son has an unusual name. At some point when he started in a new grade, he told his teacher his name was "Jack." LOL! My friend said when he had a conference with the teacher and she referred to him as "Jack", he said...who? LOL! Had a little talk with his son after that.

I like the name Obviously they picked it because they liked it and it had meaning for them.

When DH and I have kids, the last thing we will be looking for is the approval of our friends when we decide on a name.

I have experience on the other end of the spectrum. I was the one that was going to name my child an "odd" name if it was a girl. Every family member came out of the woodworks to tell me what an AWFUL name it was, even my friends at work. I was highly offended to say the least, and I was NOT going to change the name- It was Stevie Faith. Stevie, after my father (Stephen)and Faith, after my mom(Fay).

I guess it is a very good thing I wound up with two boys!!

Gee!! I wish you guys lived near me!! When I named my daughter Chloe, several of my friends/family said "Wellll, OKAY!" or "THAT's a different name!" etc.

It never bothered me, in fact it's a funny family anecdote (DD is now 14)!!

I also think that if they love the name, and it fits them, it will fit thier child. Besides, I really like it, and there are definitely some very cool nickname possibilities.

We named DS something slightly different, but not at all usual. You would have thought that we named him Obidiah Babblejack from some of the comments we got from DH's old fashioned italian family.

I don't care for it, but beauty is in the ear of the listener, you know.

I say don't say anything because if you do and they go ahead and name the child that, you'll feel bad about speaking up later on.

I can think of a couple of baby's names I didn't care for when I first heard them, but then they grew on me over time (i.e., Brianna and Nicolette).

You might not think "Tallulah" is that bad in so many years when you're used to hearing it.

This thread reminds me of something my mother did before she died. One of my sisters gave her son an unusual name. Bless her heart, mama just never could remember his name. Anyway, she just started calling him George and it stuck.

Just one of those family things, I guess.

I'd say nothing. My sister made negative comments about every name we mentioned and it drove me nuts - didn't change my mind though. (We chose very traditional names - she managed to come up with a mass murderer or a dog with every name we mentioned!)

For example "Susan - you mean like the gal who murdered her children?" or "Olivia? The neighbors dog was named Olivia - you can't name your child after a dog!" It got to be kind of funny actually. (I changed the names to protect the innocent, but you get the idea!)

It's different, but the middle name has a family connection, so I can sort of see that. Besides, how many times is your middle name really used????

Tallulah...maybe she'll be called Lu.

My friend's cousin found out she was like 1/900th American Indian shortly before she was due to give birth, so she named the child Chynna Sioux. Her second child was Violet Cherokee or something to that effect.

I have to say I feel for the child. I have an unusual name that is usually a boys name and I have hated it my whole life. I finally added my first and my middle name together when I became an adult, so its a little better. I have a family full of people with strange names, Grandmother is Lavina. 2 of us are Raes and one Daryl thats a girl (many years older than Daryl Hannah). I gave my kids names that are popular only because growing up thats what I always wanted!!
