We've taken my oldest out of school twice (once in K and this year in 4th grade). Both times were later in the school year and she had just mentioned to the teacher that we were going to FL, so they already had a head's up. I then just asked to speak to them about her being out of school. This year I went in to meet with her teacher before school to discuss what days we would be gone and what work she would like her to complete. She gave us the work about a week before we left and DD did it and turned it in before leaving. We acutally did participate in a wedding in FL (pp mentioned that as a "religious" excuse...
), visited with sick/hospitalized relatives, and went to Disney, so she missed almost 3 weeks of school. When we returned, I sent a letter to the school that "DD was out of town x-x days because we were out of town"-- no other explanation and no one ever asked. The absences were marked as "unexcused", but those were the only days she missed last year.
