Love the local pick your own farm. We are drying some this year, which is new for us. DH is currently making some strawberry sorbet. I usually make freezer jam but might invest in equipment to make 'real' jam/jelly. We have made pancakes and will freeze some; might make some ice cream. Any other suggestions?

Strawberry shortcake!

Sometimes I'll pour milk on my cake and strawberries and call it dinner :lmao:

We usually froze them and had them in smoothies, made a syrup with them and put it over brownies for a healthy dessert;)

Wash them, cap them and freeze them. Smoothies & topping for Waffles and Pancakes in the future.

You don't need too much "specialty" equipment to make strawberry jam - it's not as complicated as you think! I've made it before and had great success. I don't own a canner.

However, my favorite strawberry recipe is:

STRAWBERRY BREAD

1 – ½ C flour
½ tsp soda
½ tsp salt
1 C sugar
1 tsp orange extract
1-1/4 C strawberries (or 1 pkg frozen)
2 eggs
2/3 C melted butter
1/3 oz cream cheese
½ C chopped pecans
Baked in greased loaf pan at 350 about 60 minutes

I like to have them with heavy cream the way they eat them at. Wimbledon. I also like to dip them in Splenda

My son loves them in vanilla yogurt. He gets this in his lunch for school. Occasionally he will ask for granola to be put in and it's a less expensive parfait!

Freezer jam is really easy, but "real" jam isn't much harder. Just use the non-canning method, where you pour hot jam into the jars, quickly top them and invert. We love to sit in the living room at night and hear them "pop" as they seal. The "real" stuff is so much better than freezer jam.

I don't currently own a pan big enough to submerse a jar in hot water... & I need to buy those metal tongs, plus canning jars... I think thats it.

You really only need canning jars, and maybe a funnel.

You just need a pan big enough to cook the jam in. Once it's done, just pour the jam into jars, seal, and set upside down on your counter (as Alexander also said). They will seal on their own. Turn them over after they cool (I usually wait overnight) and you are good to go!

One of my coworkers makes a Strawberry Bread that's very good. We tend to just cut them up and put over ice cream or shortcakes for dessert, or add to a fruit salad.

OH! Am I trying to do it in some kind of old-fashioned way? I will have to look into it. Thanks!

I like the idea of strawberry bread...it sounds delicious and you could make multiple loaves to freeze.

LOL, no - or at least I don't think so.

When I first made strawberry (and blackberry) jam, I thought I needed the immersion canner and all that stuff too, but when I bought the pectin to add to the jam, it gave instructions on how to can the jam without all that fancy stuff. There's an option for "freezer jam" too, but it doesn't last as long as the canned stuff.

Strawberry Cobbler

Melt a stick of margarine or butter in a 9X9 inch glass baking dish.
transfer to a mixing bowl.

Slice and sweeten strawberries and place them into your 9X9 dish.

add to the butter in the mixing bowl..
1 cup milk
1cup sugar
1 cup flour
Mix and pour over berries

Bake 375 till browned and bubbly.
Serve with cream or ice cream....yummy!

I freeze them and make smoothies. If your fruit is frozen, you don't need ice.
Macerated and over ice cream is my fav way-next to right off the plant and into my mouth. We grow ours organically so no worries about washing them.
