What To Do If You Get A Stomach Bug In Disney

With all the misery that seems to be going from stomach bugs at Disney I really wanted to post this. Twice we've come down with bacterial/viral (who knows) stomach issues while at Disney.

There is an anti-nausea drug out there called Zofran that literally saved one of our vacations. It works sooooooo well it's amazing. I threw up for three days before ending up at the Celebration hospital, where they gave me this stuff (it dissolves on your tongue).

It was like I had been bonked with a magic wand, I instantly felt better. Well enough to go back into the parks (and probably infect some other poor souls  )

So write it down somewhere in your Passporter: ZOFRAN. You'll be glad you did.

Thanks for the advise! I had a little bug once and was stuck in my room (offsite!) for two days with a 3 year old and a husband who was stressed out being an "only parent". There seems to be a bad strain going around this summer so I think I'll pack my purell with me when I go in August.

It's prescription and boy is it pricey. $20-30 per TABLET.

No. Zofran is not OTC, and it is very expensive. I had a perscription for it during my pregnancy and hyper morning sickness (lasted the whole pregnancy), and at that it only took the edge off my constant nausea. Fortunately, our insurance covered the drug because it can be rather pricey.

Looks like we'll stick with Kaopectate and Immodium AD in case of upset tummies.

Good to know.

I am not at Disney but getting over the bug here.

NOT FUN!! But would be worse at WDW!!

No, it's prescription only.

On our last trip, I literally had hand sanitizer hanging from my belt loop. We managed to avoid the bug until the last day, our daughter started throwing up about a half hour after we left for home, and threw up the whole way back (8 hours). The minute we got in I called the pediatrician and got her a few zofran tablets.

Good thing, too, because I came down with it that morning. Ugh. Half of our family got it, half didn't. We think it was something that my younger daughter and I touched that my older daugher and husband didn't, and I didn't have a chance to purell it.

Seriously, next time I'm going to ask for a prescription BEFORE I go.

Even when stomach bugs have been rampant, we've never caught one at WDW due, I believe, to diligent Purell use. It's become habit now...we use it after rides or shows and everytime before eating. I know it may seem excessive, but it works! I'm pretty sure stomach/intestinal bugs can't be airborne, so clean hands are your best bet! On the other hand, one year, both DS and I got bad sinus infections and needed to go to the CentraCare Clinic to get anti-biotics, but that was triggered by pollen overload.

Stomach bug :confused3

It may not be a stomach bug. I noticed that my daughter got sick every trip! I told my hubby she seemed to be on a "puke around the world tour"....every vacation it was a different park...but always 2-3 days after we arrived.

Then I read on these boards that the water in the area was rough on some folks stomachs. Since then I never let her drink the water....bottled water only....and no more stomach issues.

The local water has a high sulfur content. It really bothers some folks. I can't prove it was the problem with my daughter, but the results of avoiding it are good enough for me. It has never bothered my son, hubby or me....but I make sure my daughter stays clear of it!

My mom absolutely can't drink the water either! A few trips back she goofed and had a wine cooler with ice cubes made from tap water. She was not a happy camper...-with her it was all lower intestinal unhappiness, though.

This is all very interesting. We were in Orlando - at Royal Pacific Resort, at Universal - from June 11 - June 18th. (We did spend 1 day - June 14th - at Magic Kingdom.) On Thursday (the 15th) of our visit, our DS (6) started having (excuse me) diarrhea. DH had to make a *VERY* hasty retreat from Universal Studios, to take DS back to our room at RPR, while I stayed in the park with DS (11) and DD (6). Our 6 yr old had the runs Thursday, Friday and some of Saturday. Nobody else got sick - although we were thoroughly expecting ALL of us to join him. I am perplexed, still, as to what was going on... I had Lysol'ed our room from TOP TO BOTTOM upon checking in; I had antibacterial wipes which I made everyone use OFTEN throughout our day; and also made everyone wash their hands often.

Now I'm wondering if it was the water? DH said the water was different there....

Hmm..... :confused3

WOW.. I have wondered about this. My son (14) and I got the dreaded diarrhea while there last year as well. I thought it was just a typical type bug.. but I am going to start looking at some preventive measures next time there. .thanks.

It could very, very well be the water.

Before moving down there in 2004 - I had read numerous items pertaining to families getting the *poopers* when they first moved to Florida. Different organism's in the water, etc - and until your body gets used to it...well, y'know.... ;)

So - maybe some people can handle those organism's better than others? :confused3 Iron tummies - if you will....

INteresting thought.... :scratchin

The water does have high sulfur, sometimes you can smell it (rotten egg smell). And yes, water may have different bacteria that you may not be used to. But you don't usually hear about that unless your going to Mexico right. So one thing you can do, eat lots of yogurt. Yogurt has lots of good bacteria (L. acidophilus) in it and it helps keep these in your gut. If the good bacteria fill up your gut, they outcompete the bad stuff and keep you healthy. Hey, its not a cure-all but it can't hurt.

Another nausea drug that works well and is available in generic (pretty inexpensive) is Compazine (prochlorperazine)... it is prescription, but I always travel with it. It is a pill that you swallow and they do make it in
:bitelip: suppositories
