What to charge family?

we invited my parents 3 years ago. I didn't think they would accept (but glad they did). I had to buy more points to bring them along so I did and it took the banked current and borrowed. My mom offered to pay me but I said no....this is my mom who took me on trips as a kid! They bought some groceries and bought us dinner one night and offered to at least pay my dues but I wouldn't accept it.

The next year I booked my immediate family trip and asked them if they would like to come dad said no but then a month before the trip decided to come along (again glad they came) So I didn't have enough points and my mom rented the points I was short to make our 1 bed turn into a two bedroom. We had to move a couple times but it worked out.

So this is year 3 for them. My mom decided to buy some points but just put them in my account but she has them to use when we go and I can take care of everything for them booking etc.

everyones situation is different....we didn't have the extra points but with my dad's health not being good I thought that first year would have been the one and only trip and it all worked out in the end :)

Because you have other family that would want to rent from you I think 10$ a point is fair. I would charge a sibling but I couldn't charge my parents.

I basically have a standard way of doing things when I rent to Family and friends, most of my friends know that we own DVC, when making ressies for them all I ask is that they cover my maintenance for the amt of pts they will be using, I have been doing this for sometime now and have never had any problems.

With all of those siblings I'm not sure I would even get involved in renting points to siblings. As you said you don't have that many points and you might start hurting feelings over a "no deed goes unpunished" gesture. That having been said, I think the $10 is fair. You are by no means making money on this deal. I like the idea of renting points as opposed to losing them but I purchased my points for me (and maybe someday my grand babies :thumbsup2 ) so I can go to a deluxe resort.

I'll have to go back and read through this thread...very interesting topic. We have booked 2 Xmas trips for SIL2 with our points. The first trip was in 2011 and we booked her a studio at OKW for 6 nights (where we and MIL and FIL were also staying...SIL1 stayed at SSR on her own points). I forget what the point cost was...like 90. We gifted her that (was her and her DH's birthday present that year). Then we booked for this coming Xmas (and also added on 100 AKV points for this trip). I booked SIL2 a standard view studio for 5 nights at AKV and am renting it to her this time for $8pp (72 points...we eliminated the expensive night of 12/25 this trip). I think this will be the last family Xmas trip for us, so I don't think SIL2 will use our points again...but she can, if we have them available (right now we have even used up most of 2014 points...we want to stop being in borrowing mode) and we'll just rent them to her for $8pp.

My extended family just took a trip in June 2012 which my parents paid for in its entirety. We had so much fun, we are looking at 2016 to do it again. By then, the "baby" (she was 7 months old in 2012) will be almost 5. For this trip, each family will be responsible for paying their own way. My sister's family would like to share a 2BR lock-off with us with her family of 4 taking the studio portion. I have our vacations/points based on 5-day trips and this one will be 7. I looked at how I can stretch our points over the 7 nights and we would have to 3 nights in a studio followed by 4 nights in a 1-BR. That is how I would plan it for *our* family. Since my sister would like to share. 2BR, my plan is to rent/transfer however many more points it will cost for a 2BR and have her pay for them. The way I see it is that we have already paid for our lodging by purchasing DVC. We can accommodate our family with our points but just barely. I do not see a reason for us to pay MORE just because we will be one of four family groups traveling together. We would all like to be at the same resort, but everyone has different budgets to work with and we know that might not be possible.

For the OP, I thinks that $10-11/point is perfectly reasonable. It's a little cheaper than using a broker and they are getting a huge discount off CRO prices.

We give rooms to my parents all of the time. Well, try to give...my mother ends up shoving hundreds of dollars under our door on the last morning before she leaves. She ends up giving us more money than she would have spent if she just paid for the room!

We took my in laws and my DH's brother's family one year. For the in laws it was completely gifted (only way to get them there) and BIL paid for everyone's dining plan and the in laws park tickets. It really worked out awesome.

When I rent points out to family and friends I give them a $1/point discount over what I would normally charge, plus they get to pay me in Canadian dollars instead of US dollars.

I too charge in cdn dollars but I charge twelve a point. No exceptions. Have actually been referring people to David's because we use all our points.

That's one of my concerns, I don't want to borrow. We've used all of our 2013 points Oct UY on a trip for August. We are not getting any points until 4/14 and that's only 28. So next spring we are doing a moderate stay and saving our points. Sounds silly really, but I like have them to use not borrow.

Our policy is to not allow family to use our points unless we are going on a trip and invite them along. Then we don't charge for their point usage.

We rent points to strangers when we can't use them, but that's only happened once, when DH was unemployed and we couldn't afford the rest of a trip.

My MIL and FIL are talking about coming to WDW sometime with us, now we are in the position where we would be gifting a room to them. DH is okay with doing that as long as it's probably only be going for one night/2 days. My DH is always concerned about how many points we will have, and if we will use too many in one year.

I think I'm going to use holding points if this happens, since those will expire if not used. I think OKW would be the most comfortable for 4 adults i.e. 2 studios.

We have to bank the majority of this years points anyways. I'll be surprised if they actually follow through, they don't seem to be interested in Disney.

We sell at $10 pp to friends and family. We rave well brag about how much we love DVC. They usually approach us after they have priced out a deluxe room. They pay upfront then we book. If they have a waitlist that does not come through, we refund the money. Never had any issues at all. We only rent to friends whom we know are reliable and responsible. Obviously anything can happen but we try to look ahead to prevent issues.

We have even had family travel with us renting points. Cheesy moment -It is so great to share the joy of Disney and DVC! :goodvibes
