What the heck is a "loose meat" sandwich?

Taco Bueno has these - they're called Bueno Burgers, and are more less just their taco ground beef, and they add a bit of chili sauce and cheese on top. Very similar to a loose meat sandwich. I LOVE them.

It's just a ground beef mixture without the heavy tomato sloppy joe sauce.

I use to call on the Greenville Ohio area and would always stop and get a few sandwiches while I was there. I was amazed to see the huge line of cars at the drive-thu window at lunch time!!

:rotfl2: I remember that episode. I always wondered what that was. They could have used a little marketing help though. Loose meat. Could you get any more white trash than that?

Welcome to my hometown. White Trash at its finest! :) Tom is from my town - Roseanne did, in fact, get the idea from there. There's a hole-in-the-wall place called "The Canteen" there - a tiny little place, probably no bigger than a large living room or dining room. It's lunch counter style, like in the Lunchbox, and in the middle is a huge vat that they cook the hamburger in. It's run by a bunch of ladies in their 60s! I know it doesn't sound good, but it's fantastic. Take a bite, salt the canteen, take another bite, salt again - they're incredibly greasy and bad for you, but man, they're good.

Tom and Roseanne did open their own restaurant - the Big Food Diner - in Eldon, Iowa - the home of the American Gothic House. It's not there anymore. I can't imagine it was a great moneymaker for them anyway.

They also filmed that terrible made for TV movie, The Woman Who Loved Elvis, there. Bad. Horrible movie.

Are you from Ottumwa? That's where my college roommate was from and she said Tom was from there, or maybe a nearby town.

Now, I didn't mean that the food was necessarily white trash, just the name "loose meat". ;)

I am indeed. Small world!! Yeah, loose meat does sound sort of suspicious and vague. :)

My relatives from the midwest used to have something called a Tasteeburger. I think the recipe called for a can of chicken gumbo soup, mustard, salt, and pepper. I thought about this not too long ago because I have one child that loves Sloppy Joes and another who doesn't like tomato sauce. I couldn't find chicken gumbo soup in the store so I don't know if they make it anymore.

On Roseanne, didn't it look more like sloppy joes? Like ground up beef with seasonings on a bun??

Loose meat sounds so gross to me, but I love me some sloppy joes!
That's what it kinda looked like to me too. It looked like a sloppy joe minus the tomato sauce. It looked a wee bit too dry to be any good.:p

Loose Meat is a sloppy joe without the tomato sauce. It has spices and onions. My grandma used to make them all the time and they are AWESOME!

Maid-Rites are okay. Not great. Not as good as Sloppy Joes.

But "loose meat" just sounds... gross! :crazy2:

They sound like they'd taste similar to a regular hamburger but maybe more seasoned? I wouldn't mind tasting one.

Hey my former BIL was from Ottumwa, IA. Is that a small town? He was a sweetie. :)

come on people, you all need to stop having dirty thoughts, we dont want this thread closed because the content of it has become to much for the CB.
We are talking about how the hamburger is serverd crumbled, not in a patty form.
How else would you describe it? Isnt the meat "loose" not formed together?
