Hi I am looking into buying into DVC. I am planning on renting some point this coming spring for our trip to see how we like it. I will be traveling with my wife and our two boys. Is a one bedroom big enough for a family of four?

All rooms can accomodate your needs however it depends on how much room you want...

A studio will be a little larger than your average hotel room. It would have a queen size bed and a sleeper sofa (unless you stay at Old Key West, then it is 2 queen beds). You would have a mini fridge, microwave and sink also in the room. These rooms have a regular hotel style bathroom. (accomodates 4)

A one bedroom will have a master bedroom with a king size bed and luxury bath (jacquzzi tub). A living room with a sleeper sofa and a full kitchen. (accomodates 4)

A 2 bedroom is all the amenites of the one bedroom listed above, with a second bedroom added to it that has 2 queen beds and a seperate bathroom. (accomodates 8)

There is also a Grand Villa which sleeps 12 ;) Just so you know it has The same amenites as the one bedroom, Master bedroom, sleeper sofa in the living room, full kitchen and then 2 extra bedroom, with bathrooms in each... and 2queen (or 2 full) beds in each room.

The DVC resorts do not provide rollaway beds (although some will offer an air mattress) so if your boys don't like to sleep together you might want to take that into consideration. A one bedroom would accomodate your party with plenty of room without being ontop of each other.

How old are your children? Ours are 2 and 4 and for now a studio is how we are going to get as much use from our points as possible. When they are older and we truly need more space, they will be in school anyway, so our ability to pop down 6-8 times a year will diminish into more formal, planned vacations and we will move up to a one bedroom and then a two as they grow.

If you have stayed in a hotel room together lately and thought "wow, I cannot do this again" then get a one bedroom. If you don't spend much time in your room and your children are small, maybe try tostretch your dollar a bit and get a studio.

Depending on the age of the boys that will make a difference between a one and two bedroom. Ours are growning 14 and 16 now and we really feel the two bedroom fits out needs better. When they were younger the one bedroom was more then enough.

I agree, it depends on the kids. My are older teens of different gender. If they can sleep together on a pull out, you should be fine. Remember the pull out's in the studios are all full size (not queen). OKW has 2 queens in the studio. If you will cook much and want to splurge, the 1 BR will be nice.

Also another thing to add.

We have one child, we usually get at least a 1BR (I love the privacy), but we have enough points to get a 2BR every now and then. This is great when we have guest. Those guest can be grandma or also a friend for DS. If your kids plan to have a friend down with them, you will need a 2BR for those stays.

a studio would work fine.

However I would go with the 1-bedroom for the WOW factor. So your spouse is convienced too....

A two bedroom is necessary for 4 people unless you want people sleeping in the living room. There will be two bathrooms also which would seem necessary for 4 people.

Pa, I'm really glad you didn't grow up with me...Every day of my high school life three teenage girls and my parents used a single bathroom! In the summer my cousins would visit for the week - six teenage girls and four adults using one bathroom. They are some of my favorite memories. Amazingly, we all survived this deprived childhood.

And I can't remember a vacation where the kids didn't sleep in someone's living room. For that matter, every time we had guests, us kids would get kicked out of our rooms so the grownups could have them. Hey, a pullout couch was a treat - often it was sleeping bags on the floor.

Necessary? Nah. Significantly more pleasant....certainly!

I know I'm the exception here, but we always get a studio, just for the savings on points. We travel as me, DH (we get the bed) BIL (he gets the sofa) and DD (10) (she gets an airmattress on the floor) It's about the same as staying in your typical med size hotel room. I know I would love a 1BR. I know if we ever stay in a 1BR DH will NEVER let me go back to a studio! LOL! IMO, the big question is more how many points will you be able to buy if you decide to proceed? I'm not sure there's anyone who's had a 1BR that ever went back to a studio. It would probably also depend on ages of kids - since they might be sharing the sleeper sofa

It really depends. We have two boys. When they were younger, we fit into a studio... no problem. Of course a 1BR was much more comfortable. Now that the boys bigger (11, 14) , a 1BR is our minimum standard.

Now. Last trip I make the mistake of renting a 2BR...for the TG holidays at VWL. Boy that really did it for us. They get their own space, we have our space... and I can have my morning coffee and check out the DIS boards in peace and quiet. :cool1: Can we ever go back to a 1BR? :teleport:

Word of advice. Don't tryout a 2BR unless your prepared to deal with the consequences. :smooth:

timC: That is what we attempted to do in October when we invited my SIL to come along after we had already made the reservation. We were unable to get the 2 bedroom and were on the waiting list for about two months. We had the three of us, plus the SIL and it was crowded. Just waiting for the bathroom in the morning for everyone to get their shower, dry hair, etc. I grew up in a house with only one bathroom (four kids, two parents), but we never put the rush on the bathroom like we do at WDW. Next time we have four, we're going for the two bedroom.

I would go with the TWO bedroom for the WOW factor, plus the extra space.

While I agree a 2 bedroom would be luxurious for 4 people, I don't think it's "necessary". The majority of people who vacation with 4 people stay in a regular hotel room with 2 beds and 1 bathroom and get by ok. When someone takes a cruise, a normal stateroom for 4 people only has 1 bathroom and is smaller than DVC studio accomodations.
So, unless your two sons (their ages would make a difference in the decision) don't want to share a bed, I'd save the points and go with a 1 bedroom villa. But if you really want to splurge and live the high life, go with the 2 bedroom.

You could certainly fit into a 1 bedroom easily. A 2 bedroom has more space and ensures comfort for everyone.
