What Singer or Group had only moderate success but you Loved them

Just to give people a taste of one of their best songs:

The entire Dead Man's Party album is great. Not just one or two good singles but something I could listen through the entire album.

There was a time when there were demented with songs like Only a Lad and Little Girls.

I have heard that! Probably around Halloween. They’re jammin though. 🙂 It kind of reminds me of my favorite Elfman song, the beetlejuice opening. New sounds joining in to build up to this manic ride of a song.

I have a copy of Music for a Darkened Theater somewhere. I know it's not as well known, but his work on Midnight Run was really underrated. It wasn't orchestral like most of his work.

Barenaked Ladies probably fall into this category. I remember buying the Yellow Album from Sam the Record Man's flagship store.
They still sell out large arenas, at least pre-Covid. Quite a few hits and huge following so I think they did pretty well. My favorite BNL song will always be Brian Wilson.

Back in the mid sixties there was a West Coast group called Merry Go Round who released one album in 1967.
When they disbanded in 1969 Emitt Rhodes went solo and, between 1970 and 1973 released four albums.
These made it as far as the UK and I really enjoyed their fresh, John Lennon-like sound.
Nothing after that until a new album in 2016!
Interesting fellow.

Danny worked with Oingo Boingo long before his composing career. He actually inherited the band from his brother Richard who got into directing movies. They are an amazing band though, with lots of horns and unusual instruments. He eventually gave up playing rock music because he wanted to preserve his hearing, so the band basically ended in 1995. He still collaborates with guitarist Steve Bartek from the band though.
The other members of Oingo Boingo still do shows. They did one in Pasadena fairly recently. Work got in the way or we would have gone. Hope to see them again after life returns to normal. And you are right -- they are amazing!

I mean they made it to some degree but such a better band than being know for Stacy'ss Mom.
Not a bad song on this album.
Sadly one of thetwo core member/writer/musician died from Covid last month

It's one of those things that's hard for me to gauge since they are of course quite popular in Canada.

When I think a bit more, Our Lady Peace might better fit the bill as a popular Canadian artist with moderate success in the US. They did seem to get consistent play on the alternative stations when I worked in Houston.

Yeah, they definitely did some weirder stuff on their first couple of albums. I do like how their sound evolves over the course of their run. I enjoy Only a Lad too, but Dead Man's Party is really the definitive album. Ever hear SO-LO, Danny's "solo" album that was really just him and the band? That one's a bit of a lost gem, but is quite good to. Some songs were covered on Alive - Grattitude and It Only Makes Me Laugh.

Midge Ure. He co-wrote "Do They Know It's Christmas" and had a solid career in the band Ultravox and as a solo artist. Saw him live a few times and his vocals are so strong.

"Do They Know It's Christmas" is one of the most dreadfully written songs out there, IMO. He wasn't very proud of the song at all.
