What Singer or Group had only moderate success but you Loved them

I have to go with The Stompers. Legendary Boston band who did chart with this song in 1983. Love love love their music and energy! They are still at it today too, just the absolute best!

Yeah, they definitely did some weirder stuff on their first couple of albums. I do like how their sound evolves over the course of their run. I enjoy Only a Lad too, but Dead Man's Party is really the definitive album. Ever hear SO-LO, Danny's "solo" album that was really just him and the band? That one's a bit of a lost gem, but is quite good to. Some songs were covered on Alive - Grattitude and It Only Makes Me Laugh.

Gratitude was on the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. That’s how I have it.

Boi-ngo had a special release as a box set of 5 7” 45s. I wish I'd bought it when it was new.

Nice! Oingo Boingo was the first band I got really obsessed with and acquired liteally everything they recorded, with BOI-NGO being the secone one I bought after Dead Man's Party. Interestingly, it was Flesh & Blood on the Ghostbusters II soundtrack that got me interested, and that's a very one-off song for them (especially that version which Danny actually hates). This was many years later mind you, but I bought all the CDs and even got some old outtakes and concert recordings from the 70's with some 80's stuff too (they were tossed in with an ebay lot of the Farewell concert DVD). Much of that was released by the band as a download called Forbidden Boingo, but it had some great stuff on it, including this one which may be my true favorite: From the soundtrack to The Last American Virgin:

Yeah, I know, but I love talking Boingo!

My pick for a lot of people may sound like a one hit wonder, but they did get their own tv show for a short while. Starland Vocal Band. Most people only know them for Afternoon Delight, but they had some other wonderful songs on that album as well. My particular favorite is an a cappella song called American Tune. In an age where so many singers get a little “help” with their voices, these four could really sing.

They had a great sound and I have always liked the "2 girls and 2 guys" Band "dynamic".(ABBA,The Mamas and the Papas,etc.).

Very "interesting" subject matter for their hit single as well!lol :)

That's Paul Carrack (aka "The Man with the Golden Voice") on lead vocals. I think Tempted and Black Coffee in Bed had Elvis Costello singing backup.

And come to think of it, Elvis Costello is extremely influential but he's never really had that much chart success in the US.

If you love Paul Carrack (I do) you might enjoy his visit with Gary Barlow (Take That) on his facebook series that has run since the pandemic began. He has hosted so many great artists on his daily video/vocal posts.., it has been all kinds of awesome!! Anyone looking for some great music and some throw back unexpected guests, it’s The Crooner Sessions on fb or the hashtag #thecroonersessions

Here’s Over My Shoulder with Paul Carrack

They actually had nine albums IIRC including a Christmas album. But they are always put on the one hit wonders list like they only had one song.

Love Boston!!
I will add Andy Gibb, Shaun Cassidy and Pousette Dart to the list.

Pulling Mussels, Hourglass...Squeeze is GREAT!

My favorite band ever is Oingo Boingo with Danny Elfman - I don't know how big they ever were, but it seems like they weren't too huge, with only a few soundtrack hits. They are THE BEST!
Me too. Be sure and watch the "Nightmare Before Christmas" episode of "Prop Culture" on Disney+. They spend quite a bit of time with Danny Elfman - and it explains a lot of why Oingo Boingo is no longer a thing.

Just to give people a taste of one of their best songs:

Oooohh - sorry, gonna disagree - IMHO, Dead Man's Party was Oingo Boingo past their prime.
Did you know, Oingo Boingo won the original pilot episode of the Gong Show? Jayne P. Morgan flashed her breasts during the closing credits and the censors didn't catch it too. Loved that show - good times.

I did know that. I believe they were still the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo at the time. My outtakes have a lot of the stuff from that time. I liked their little acapella show intro. I really like the stuff before Dead Man's Party too, but really that is their peak and the strongest album start to finish.

Southside Johny, I seen him so many times in concert, loved his stuff here is a couple of his songs (he was big in New Jersey and Northren Ohio

I saw them back in the mid 70s (I think) in Boston as the lead-in for Boz Scaggs.

They still sell out large arenas, at least pre-Covid. Quite a few hits and huge following so I think they did pretty well. My favorite BNL song will always be Brian Wilson.

And then there's that whole "Big Bang Theory" theme song thing...

I'm still a big Southside Johnny fan! But growing up in Cleveland in the '70's and '80's, there was no group bigger than Michael Stanley Band. Not much on Youtube of them. Saw them at Blossom in the summer, the Coliseum New Year's Eve, etc.
