We have a Kahn's Mongolian Garden here. Shaved meats plus assorted veggies/noodles/sauces that you take to the cooks who cook it up on these big round surfaces.

Lums was the first place that popped in my mind. We used to go as kids when we visited my grandparents in Florida. I remember that they served the food in little plastic baskets. I vaguely recall seeing one in Upstate NY on the way to Niagra Falls many many years ago but I don't know if it was related.

Pizzaria Uno is still around - it's UNO's Pizzaria & Grill now. There's even one at Crossings right outside DTD.

In my hometown there used to be a pizza place called Spanky's, and I'm sure it was a franchise. You ordered your pizza and drink at a counter, then sat down and waited for your meal. Meanwhile, they showed old short-reel movies (like Our Gang) on a big screen. It was a fun, cheap place to go out.

Bennigan's. Although now that I live in southern IL on the border of Kentucky I'd love any sit down restaurant. Where I live the nearest one is about 45 minutes away. :(

Maybe you guys will get your wish.It covers both Bennigans and Steak & Ale. I like hearing Steak & Ale might come back, now they have to put it where the old one in our town has been an eyesore since it closed. http://bennigans.com/bennigans-conc...owth-enters-2014-85-new-restaurants-pipeline/

There was one in Dallas with a cool waterfall next to it. I never ate there, but my mom did. It was very neat looking.

I miss Bennigans. I love the broccoli bites and the Turkey O'Toole.

I CAN'T THINK OF THE NAME OF IT!!!

There used to be a restaurant in the Long Beach, CA area where the servers would dress up as different characters and so some acting. It was loads of fun and I only was able to go twice when I was very young.

The name is just on the tip of my tongue so now I must go and Google.

Bobby McGee's! I had to ask around to get the name. Each server dressed as a character and would be that character throughout your meal. A pirate, Superman, a Wizard, etc.

My mom and I would have fun shopping days and always went to Bennigan's where I'd get potato skins or Olga's where I'd get their melted cheese wrap with yogurt dipping sauce. I think about Olga's often and have seen their Greek recipes posted online. I may just make them one day! At the mall they also had Bain's Deli which I loved too. Miss those shopping (and eating!) days!

I am going with Swensen's Ice Cream Parlour, that used to be all over the U.S. The one in our neighborhood was in Carmel, CA and they served ice cream sundaes that were unimaginably decadent in the early 70s. It was a huge treat to go there, and I loved the old-fashioned, turn-of-the-century look of the place. It was the first place I ever had chocolate sprinkles. Chocolate ice cream with hot fudge and those sprinkles served in a stemware glass. Yum. We would window shop down the tree-lined main street afterwards, looking into the warmly lit shops where artists made creations out of redwood and abalone shells. It was the first place, outside of Disneyland, that decorated trees with little white twinkling lights.

There are still a few left, and strangely they are a growth franchise in Asia.

The original location in San Francisco is still operating. It was retained by the owner and still run by his family. The Wiki article on the chain says there are only four locations in the US, but that could have changed.

Not that I ever ate there, but there was this legendary restaurant in San Francisco's Chinatown called Sam Wo. It was in this really thin building (they all touch each other on a block) and you supposedly had to go through the kitchen to get to the dining floors. It was cheap and open late. However, what it was most famous for was "The world's rudest waiter" - Edsel Ford Fong. The first thing he'd say to a table was "Sit down and shut up!". He was known for criticizing customers' orders and just bringing something else. If anyone asked for a Coke, he's yell "No Coke, only tea." Even though he was born and raised in San Francisco, he'd sometimes act as if he barely understood English. He's take away people's food before they were done and would scream at anyone he thought left a poor tip. And the one thing he was especially famous for was groping female customers. Apparently a lot of people knew about it and intentionally failed to warn their female friends about it to see how they'd react to the inevitable grope.

Edsel (whose brother was Henry Ford Fong - also a waiter there) died in the early 80s, but the place lived on.

Basically the San Francisco Health Dept finally shut down the place due to numerous uncorrected code violations.

OMG! Pipers & Swensons - I remember both. I loved the ice cream place called Farrell's. Also the Victoria Station that was in Oakland. Since they were a chain, were all the restaurants designed around railroad cars?

Swensons was awesome! I loved that place! There are a few local places that have closed down up here. I miss them! :sad1:
