Christian, specifically Lutheran. For those of you who don't want to be identified with Christians because of the right wingers or other zealots, don't drop out, stay with it and set a better example. Those of us, of any religion who don't agree with what's going on need to stand up and speak out. It's a cop out to criticize but not try to change things, I think. I don't mean this as a flame, but nothing is perfect, especially people or organized religion. We shouldn't let a few bad apples make us doubt our faith. :)
I agree. I am Christian, and like Jodifla, I hate the way we seem to have become defined by the zealots. But I do try to speak out and let people know that the fundamentalists don't speak for all of us.

I'm a little surprised at the lack of diversity shown in the poll. Not a single Muslim or Hindu (as I post, anyway)? It's also a little opposite of what I see in my area, which includes many more Muslims, Hindus and Wiccans than Atheists, (despite being a primarily white, Christian suburban area). I agree with those who said that some probably don't feel comfortable admitting to being Atheist/Agnostic when not anonymous. :sad2:

Voted Agnostic

I can't believe somebody felt it was necessary to use this thread to take shots at JW. :rolleyes1
I really hope you are not directly that at my post directly above yours because I am honestly asking a question about a faith I do not understand. The person who posted here about being a Jehovahs witness has different beliefs than a friend who is one so I am asking about it.I thi k it is better to ask about what you dont know rather than make assumtions about people.

I didn't see anyone taking shots at JW.
In many if not all Protestant denominations JW and LDS are looked upon as non Christian.

I am also confused. a family friend is JW and although she believes Jesus existed she does not know him as Christ and does not consider him to be her Lord and savior.Since that is really what it means to be Christian I would not consider JW to be a Christian faith. I am always willing to learn more so if someone can explain please do.
I really appreciate these good questions about Jehovah’s Witnesses. I was previously concerned with the source of information someone posted earlier. Just like anything else in life, you can’t believe everything you hear or read, especially off the Internet. There is a lot of bogus material out there. Even about non-controversial figures like Walt Disney. I would much rather read a reliable source or official source of information. And believe me there is propaganda on the net even about Walt Disney that I wouldn’t even give the time of day. So I am glad you are taking the time to ask me personally. :thumbsup2

I'll do my best to answer your questions. I don’t know your family friend who is one of Jehovah’s Witness, so it’s impossible for me to speak for her. But I do think the first thing we need to do is establish what the words “Christ” and “Savior” mean.

In Hebrew, the name Jesus means “Jehovah Is Salvation” and Christ is the equivalent of the Hebrew Ma·shi´ach (Messiah), meaning “Anointed One.” It’s from these Hebrew definitions that Jehovah’s Witnesses base their beliefs.

Evidently there are many people here who believe in Jesus. And so do we; otherwise I would not be discussing this right now. In fact, the importance of faith in Jesus is prominently featured in our publications.

The Bible clearly says: “12 Furthermore, there is no salvation in anyone else, for there is not another name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must get saved.” (Acts 4:12) Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that. But we have also learned that serious responsibilities go with it. How is that? Well, if Jehovah’s Witnesses really believe in Jesus...then we can’t believe in him just as far as it seems convenient, like some have the habit of doing.

Christ Jesus perfect life given in sacrifice makes it possible for us to have forgiveness of sins. But we believe that it is also vital to pay attention to his instructions regarding our responsibilities as Christians.

So Jehovah’s Witnesses truly believe that Christ Jesus IS the “Messiah”, and “Anointed One”…our “Savior”.

If you want to know more about such matters, I invite you to attend the Memorial of Christ's death on April 12, 2006 (Nisan 14 on the Jewish calender), at a Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in your area. This is the holiest day of the year for Jehovah’s Witnesses. Well...I hope this clears up any misunderstandings. Thanks for asking. ::yes::

Hey Steven  just curious where you WERE going?? You can use initials if you want - I'll figure it out. Born and raised Southern Baptist here too, and I'm just wondering - no flames, I promise!

HBC on 9 mile road.

Non Practicing Catholic and the older I get the more skeptical I get of all religions. It's kind of like way back when when everyone thought the world was flat. Everyone else believes and I feel like I am the only one that goes, gee you're out of your mind. :rotfl2:

Here's some info which fits this thread perfectly:

In the Netherlands 50% of the population have dumped religion completely, which IMHO makes them one of the advanced countries on this planet. Now, if they could build decent cars and play good soccer I would move there ;)

I voted 'atheist', of course. Tried an agnostic approach, but reason and logic won.

I voted Christian, as I am very spiritual, but do not currently have a practicing denomination.

Catholic; but in my pretend life...

(Jedi)

It's funny you should say that, because when I went to those classes for PSR teachers, our teacher was a nun who was describing something about the Catholic faith, and I said, uhhhhh, so it's kind of like Star Wars, with the force, and the dark side?" And she said, "exactly", that she felt that the Jedis would be very good Catholics!!

So, we have the permission of a Roman Catholic nun to be both Catholic and Jedi!!!LOL :thumbsup2
