So, we're talking about ticket prices going way up and disgusted with the VWL renovations and thinking it might be time to sell off some contracts and use the proceeds to buy another timeshare. We've got one at Marco Island (love that place) so we're thinking of other places we might want to buy. Or we could buy another week at Marco.

We're not into Hawaii or Mexico, we don't ski, we don't want to fly anywhere, so we'd be driving. We've thought about Sedona and Upper Peninsula or Northern Michigan. What are some other great places where we could buy a timeshare? We're not into trading. We just want to own something and stay there.

So where are your favorite timeshare locations and which timeshares?

We bought Wyndham Smokey Mountains to stay in the area of Great Smokey Mountains National Park. It's a drive from Iowa but we really enjoy that area of the country.

What about somewhere in NC like Lake Lure or the Outer Banks? We own one in Lake Lure that looks really nice...we've always traded it, but some year we want to try staying there. It looks like fun.

If you have some strong traders, why not trade around a little bit and see what appeals to you? You might find one that you wouldn't have otherwise considered that way.

ETA - What are the VWL renovations? The last time we stayed there, it looked like the bathroom tile had seen better days, but it wasn't as trashed as the BWV (at least, not the unit we got). It could use some updating though.

We have always enjoyed Hilton Head. You could use your points to stay at the Disney resort and check out the island. There are a lot of Timeshare options on the island.

yeah, i like hilton head - plenty of marriotts or former marriotts that are solid. coastal maine in the summer is a great idea - i'm trying to trade into harbor ridge later this year. or break the no-fly rule and get a week at marriott's newport coast resort in CA. :)

Try New Orleans... The spring time around The French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest would be a lot of fun... In addition to the festivals during the spring, you have crawfish season, airboat tours, nature trails, plantations to visit and of course all the great restaurants...

We're headed there in ten days for the weekend. Mardi Gras will be over and we should have a better time. And I have crawfish just down the street from me any time I want in the spring time. No need for a NOLA timeshare. I live in LA.

We have no interest in HHI-DVC. But we could check on other timeshares. We might do some VRBO or Redweek rentals to check out some areas.

I would look at some of the timeshare systems that offer you great flexibility with a lot of resorts and destinations -- like Wyndham, Hilton, Marriott, Bluegreen, etc. You can buy many of those for very little on eBay and have dozens of options to choose from within their system...without exchanging.

The one I am most familiar with is the one we own -- Wyndham Smoky Mountains. I got a pretty large contract (roughly equivalent to 600-700 DVC points in what it will buy) for less than $2,000 including closing and transfer fees on eBay. I have access to about 90 Wyndham resorts all over the US, including many in the east and midwest. We've owned for three years and have been very pleased so far.

Each system has its pros, cons, and nuances, so like DVC the devil is in the details. You'll have to go back to school to learn a new system. I would pay particular attention to where the system has resorts, and make sure some of the destinations interest you. With the larger systems, you should find pretty good options for some nice resorts.

Assuming your Marco week is not in a system, I'd suggest you consider another mini points system like Bluegreen, Wyndham, Worldmark, Marriott trust points, Hilton, Shell, Hyatt, Diamond or similar. Just look at where you like to go and see who has good resorts in those areas. From a cost/value standpoint some of those are much better than others. If you simply want a resort to stay at mostly, I'd consider a good Marriott, possibly one that's a lockoff so you'd have good secondary trade options like Ocean Point. No one size fits all. One good and bad thing about Bluegreen in your situation is no home resort priority for their points.
