I always start with lights,
then beaded garland,
fancy special glass ornament (top of tree),
favorite ornaments,
finally filler ornaments.

I don't put tinsel or tinsel garland on the tree, but tinsel would be last and tinsel garland would go on after the lights.

Today I was at someones house and they had put the garland on last. Said it filled in holes of the tree. I thought it just covered up the ornaments. Does anyone else do this. Have I been doing it wrong? LOL

We always decorated the tree like you...lights first, garland, ornaments and tinsel (I didn't like it, but DH insisted on using it)

Garland
Lights
Tree Skirt
Ornaments
Stars
Candy Canes
then I always have presents to put under the tree.

We always put the lights on, then the ornaments. We put the most special ornaments on first (could be the glass ones, or could just be memorable, like the WDW ones), then the filler ornaments. We use no garland, tinsel, ribbon, beads, popcorn, cranberries, etc. Only lights and ornaments. Yeah, we're boring but that's the way it is.

We do lights, balls, ornaments, glass icicles/candy canes/ candles & garland last. But I have to say that our garland is wooden hearts on twine - not the fat, bushy stuff - so it doesn't cover the ornaments. (Our candles are the kind that are a pair with the wick still joined in the middle - so they hang over the branches by the wick & never get lit.) Our tree topper is a lighted angel, so she goes on with the lights.

Angel for the top first, because our tree is so tall that none of us can reach to get her there once it's up. Then lights (clear ones for my husband and colored ones for me). Then garland or lace ribbon (we alternate). Then ornaments. Then tree skirt and Santa fence that goes around the bottom.

Lights (or light check if we left them on from last year)
Tinker Bell Tree Topper
Artificial Flowers
Ribbon (if using it)
Ornaments
Throw on tinsel balls from across the room

Voila!

Lights first, than the star topper, than the ornaments.

Here's the order we decorated in this year:
1) I left the house.
2) Husband and kids decorated anyway they wanted to.
3) I came home.
4) I moved all the ornaments from the lower branches that would get knocked off by presents.
5) Will try to remember to use the same order next year!

First the lights, then the ornaments and then the tree topper. The skirt goes on around the tree and then our mini WDW goes up around the tree. Can't forget the monorail or train they go up after the the buildings are up. Putting up is much easier than putting away.
