What musical instruments can/did you play

I used to play flute and piccolo but stopped those to focus on my singing.
I am not taking piano lessons any longer but I can still play it and that helps with voice.

I don't play but I have raised two band geeks! DS graduated last year from HS and played trumpet in class from 6th grade through HS and then in marching, jazz and pep bands as well as french horn for one year in symphonic band. My DD, 16 and a sophomore, has played clarinet since 6th grade in class and one year in marching band and then in her freshman year started playing trumpet and taking lessons so she could be in jazz band (no clarinets in our jazz band). This year she was asked to play trumpet in marching and stuck with that in pep band most of the time as well as being in jazz band. She has been chosen as a drum major for marching band for the next two years. She also fools around with the keyboard and just started with guitar.

I played flute from 5th grade to 12th. When I got to high school and did marching band, I did colorguard instead (which I LOVED!)...still played flute for concerts. Still have my flute...haven't touched it in years, though.

My DH is a music education major...he plays percussion, but also has to learn all the other instruments to a certain degree.

I'm a band geek!:teeth: I play clarinet in my school's marching band and top concert band. My mom can play the piano and also played the clarinet in high school and she now plays in our church orchestra (I sometimes play there too if they don't have enough people). My dad played clarinet in high school too, and he thinks he can still play..... My younger brother plays the french horn in jr high and my youngest brother wants to play the drums...he's only 9 and he's already planning to be drumline captain when he gets to high school!

My mom gave me piano lessons when I was little, but when we moved to Ohio 6 years ago we had to get rid of our piano.:( I want to learn to play better though. I also really wanna learn to play sax!

The kind of bands I was in in high school had more to do with David Lee Roth than John Philip Sousa. :p :p
I gigged for a number of years in the 80s in classic rock and metal cover bands. I played bass.
Then I figured I'd better finish school and sold all my stuff, got married, bought a house... And then proceeded to fill it with guitars and basses and other stringed things.
So now, I play:
Guitar
Bass guitar
Bouzouki
Mandolin
Penny whistle
Low whistle
Upright bass

I've got my eye on a six string banjo next. (Banjitar - Neil Young plays one from time to time.)

Tuba here. But that was a long time ago. I graduated in 1958. However, I found a used tuba about 7 years ago and bought it, so I do play it a little now just for my own pleasure. I can't find anywhere to play it locally.

Let's see, I was a bit of a band geek, but some things I learned on my own.

I started off playing piano and still do, I then took up the clarinet and from there the saxaphone, I dabbled in flute (but didn't learn very much), and I also play acoustic guitar (but I have a very hard time with it and get frustrated).

Hi,

I'm skutle's huband. I'm a percussionist....it you beat it I play it.

Its aewsome that so many of you were involved with bands/music.

If there were a way to be part of band similar to like you were in high school....would you do it? What if there were no audition or anything?of if everyine was in a similar situation to you...kids...family....career...etc.?What if it was only to have fun and perform a few concerts a year? only met on weekends of evenings to accomidate your schedule? IF you answer yes then do a Google search for a comunity band in your area. Most communities have them.

I found the Gulf Coast Concert Band in Houston for Carl. Here's the addy. http://www.geocities.com/gulfcoastconcertband/

If anyone else needs help finding a band near them...just let me know.

This is one of the concerns of music educators, that people look at Music and band as just something that you do as a kid in high school. People do not see the value in music and the live perfomance of music and that's part of the reason music gets cut from the budget. I can go on and on about this subject.....

FIND A COMMUNITY BAND NEAR YOU!!!! AND HAVE FUN.....

For me its started back in 5th grade when a heard voice calling to me...actually it was the principal on the pa system saying anyone interested in playing music go the gym. I thought hey any reason to get out of class works for me! That night I told my parents. My Dad went into the basement and brought up an odd looking case. I watched as my Dad unclasped the hinges and opened it.
My eyes lit up as the sunlight streaming from the window cast the brass instrument aglow. As did King Arthur so many years ago pulled the stone from I pulled the shiny trombone from the case and held it...another trombone player was born.

My Dad had loved to play and played it as the member of the Akron U marching band. I spent many years in elementary school, jr high and high school learning and enjoying it. Then in the fall 1982..*humming circle of life song*... in a moment I'll always remember, I took the field in front of near capacity crowd as member of the Akron University taking up where my father had left off.

ps: Everyone tells me I'm so over dramatic ..naaaaaaaah :teeth:

My yonger brother also took up the trombone as well where he played in jr high and high school. His path took him to a diff college but he still played there. He is now 32 and still plays the trombone in a church orchestra in Akron.

I play bass guitar. Mainly rock/punk, but also a little jazz & blues.

I play a B.C. Rich Warlock platinum in custom see-through blue acrylic with all black hardware.

Not a band geek but I did play the Piano for about 15 yrs. I still can play simple things but I wish I could still play it like I did even 5 yrs. ago. I also sang so that was/is my main instrument now.

Flute and piano. Though my flute is 'dead' now, and I had to give away my piano a couple of years ago. Ho hum.....would love to take up the flute again, though.:)

Brer-Papa, I also played the accordion for nine loooong years. It was around 1950 that I started. I was 5 years old. We even had an accordian band and played for the hospitals and old age homes. My teacher had grand hopes that I would be on Ted Mack's Amateur Hour, but I always FROZE when I had to play before an audience. In my 30's I took organ lessons for about 15 years and had a lot of fun with that. I don't play much anymore, sorry to say.

band camp - oh yeah! Great memories there...

I started piano at age 5, clarinet in 4th grade, soprano clarinet in middle school, decided I wanted to be a band director so my high school band director made me learn baritone, trombone, trumpet, percussion (he even made me learn the basic rudiments - I can still do them...); I can find my way on flute and sax, oboe and bassoon are a bit of a challenge...went to college for Music Ed - double majored in Spanish since I was an exchange student to Mexico in high school. My first teaching job was as a high school Spanish teacher, and my extracurricular was directing the high school musical...I still play piano nearly every day - that is my love. And bless my mother for making me stick with it during middle school, particularly during a period of 2 years when I refused to practice - she hauled my butt to lessons every week and told me that I couldn't quit until I was out of high school. Of course, by then I didn't want to quit....

My own kids are musical - both play piano (and can't stop taking lessons until they are out of high school - I have become my mother, thank goodness the kids love taking lessons), DS plays trumpet and DD plays flute. DS has taken a shine to choir and is becoming a vocalist..

DH never learned to play an instrument but has a terrific ear! Thank goodness he enjoys music because there is a lot of it in our house...

Still not a xylophone player in sight..where did they all go? Did they go to band campp and never return? It's a mystery.....

AAAH...AngelRose...i sympthize....9 years would be looooong years..lol...

I also was taken out on "tour"....hospitals and the like...plus...there would be the summer recitals....

ours were held on a stage at a local amusememnt park....if you played you got ride tickets...if you did a solo...you got extra ride tickets....i figured "what the hey" and did the solo's......

after the recital, i would leave the stage ready to ride...my 2 older sisters wanted a cut of my tickets....they reasoned they earned them since they did most of the lugging of the accordian and the case...a squabble erupted.....since either one of them coud give me a good whoopin'...i coughed them up.....

I've played violin since I was about 3 (Suzuki -- they want kids starting as young as possible), and viola since 4th grade. (I wanted to be in orchestra, but I was miles ahead of the other kids playing violin so I just picked up a different instrument.) I tried clarinet for about a year in middle school, but it wasn't really for me.

I still play viola and sort of play violin. I taught both up until I did the WDWCP, but since I'm sort of in flux right now I don't think it'd be a good idea to start taking any new students.

Just the piano for me about 5 years of it :)

Yet another band geek, complete with band camp stories!

6 years playing the clarinet, with some saxophone and flute thrown in.

DS takes guitar lessons, and I figured I might as well do something constructive during his lesson instead of just waiting in the reception room reading magazines, so I've been taking piano lessons! I think I'm the oldest student at the music school.:p Just me and all the grade school kids!
