What medicines do you take?

I agree with a previous poster I pretty much pack everything we have at home. While on vacation we have been to the hospital for pink eye on two separate trips (never had it any other time) and swimmers ear. I agree with the drops for ears to dry the water to avoid swimmers ear. I have'nt tried the head on but I find the Exedrin Migraine works for me as someone also mentioned and if you can an ice pack at the back of the head near the neck, just keep a ziploc bag with you and ask for a cup of ice or get ice at the hotel. I also keep a small amount of meds on me for in the parks (execedrin migraine, advil, tums and pepto and a few bandaids chapstick and sun screen) it has saved the day and allowed us to keep on with our plans. I also make sure I have antibacterial gel and make sure we use it before eating anything, we will especially be using this after I saw a report on how bad the germs were in the airplane bathrooms I tempted to go in with plastic gloves.

Th\Has any one tried that Head On stuff for headaches? I was wondering if it actually works because I get terrible migraine type headaches and would like instant relief while I wait for the Motrin to kick in.

I haven't tried it, but as it is homeopathic, you give me a great intro into what I bring to Disneyland. :)

Homeopathy is incredible, incredible stuff. We use it almost exclusively. I don't generally buy the things like Head On, I prefer to use single remedies and cross-check in my two homeopathy books, to make SURE that the remedy I want to use matches the symptoms really well.

The main thing we have on hand is arnica; both the pellets that dissolve under your tongue, and topical arnica to rub into sore muscles or bruises (3 year old boy explains the bruises...on ALL of us, ha ha). I just bought some new arnica lotion, and the family-run makers of the product I bought said that arnica is THE number-one prescribed pain reliever in Europe (where they are sane, and use homeopathy regularly!). Arnica is incredible stuff. We were at our farmer's market as a break from moving, we saw this booth with the arnica. They had a sample. I asked DH where he hurt the most, he said his calves (not a surprise, as he ONLY wears Tevas, even when moving furniture). I put a tiny dab on my finger, rubbed the stuff into his calf, and within 30 seconds he was almost crying b/c the pain was SO gone. Of course then his other calf started screaming, so I put some on that side too. :) We of course bought some, and he walked with a pain-free spring in his step the whole way.

OBVIOUSLY that stuff is going in the checked bags (too big for carryon) for our trip!

We used to use homeopathic chamomile, but for some reason that doesn't work all that well anymore.

We also use Rescue Remedy, which is officially flower essences, but it's homeopathic, too. That stuff can keep peace in our family like nothing else!

As for coughs and colds and whatnot, we just generally don't medicate for those. If I find a perfect remedy in my book, and can get it, I might try it, but even when on a trip that we've paid for, if someone is feeling low, we don't like to medicate them so they can "go go go", we'll just rest, get some Emergen-C (vitamin C and other vites and minerals) into them, and boost their immune system. That way we're not spreading germs everywhere, also. :)

(we have used western medicines to "drug" one or more of us when we are ALL sick at the same time, and I can't take care of DS like I want to...then I've given him triaminic to suppress a cough b/c I was so sick I was almost passing out from exhaustion...but its' a last resort thing, if I simply canNOT take care of him in my usual manner)

SO as to the head-on question. It really cannot hurt to try it. In fact I'd try it BEFORE you take your western medicine, because you might be surprised as to how well it might work (if the remedies in it match your symptoms it should work...if they are the wrong remedies for your exact situation at that moment, it probably won't work). And if it doesn't, I'd try arnica. DH used to get migraines (from toddlerhood), but since he found chiropractic and arnica, he pretty much never gets them anymore.

I totally agree about the arnica, this is a must in our house and really does do so much to help w/ sore muscles and bruises. What I like is that it really speeds the process along.

I have a question about the swimmers ear drops that several posters have mentioned. Are these OTC or prescrption? I have super sensitive ears and would like to get some. Are they for use after you get swimmers ear or as a prevention? Also- is there a brand I should be looking for?

I noticed that one person mentioned airborne and I'd add that I bring that along too. In fact, all of us take this the day before traveling and the day we leave. I bring it along in case any cold-like symptoms appear while on the trip.

That is a really good idea! I always get sick when we fly and shortly after getting to Disney so I really like this one. Thanks for the idea. I wonder if I can take it while breastfeeding, anyone know?

We used to pack alot of nsaids(pain killers) and benedryl but since I graduated from school I just adjust my wife, son, and parents.(lol working vacation) and we dont use many pain killers anymore. I do acupuncture for my dad and his allergies don't act up at all down there so the last 2 years we have come back with almost all our meds.

I know here in Canada you can buy it OTC, or just put a couple of drops of rubbing alcohol (or even alcohol..if you don't mind the smell of booze in your ear...LOL) in your ear after swimming. It dries out the ear after swimming to prevent swimmer's ear. Hubby got it once and then there was a fungus growth, first time I saw him cry in pain, couldn't even turn his head. Now we take it where ever we go.

I bring both prescription for pain and an OTC preventative. My pediatrician said you can just mix 1/2 alcohol (to dry the ear) and 1/2 vinegar(to kill bacteria) after swimming to keep from getting swimmer's ear. We never found the mineral oil to work well.

I never heard of mineral oil....wouldn't that just trap everything in and not allow it to dry out? 1/2 alcohol and 1/2 vinegar sounds like a good combo...I must keep that in mind.

My goes-everywhere-with-me kit contains small amounts of the following:
tylenol
benadryl
bandaids
antacid
sudafed
immodium
dramamine
mini sewing kit

I also bring Excedrin and ibuprofen but those stay at the condo. I also bring all prescriptions with me.

I haven't seen moleskin mentioned. It is great for blisters--and for preventing blisters!

I always bring Imodium and Advil for the grownups.

Bring whatever medicines work for your kids when they get sick! the shops at WDW has some things but not a great selection.

I had my little pharmacy packed and DH talked me out of bringing most of it. Well dont you know both kids had issues that if I had the stuff we normally take we would have been fine. DS9 only likes grape flavored so when his allergies flared up (due tot he wildfire smoke) we try to give him something else, well he gagged and threw it right up, luckily in the bathroom of our room!

We also needed to give both kids stuff for during the day and everything onsite was for nighttime and would make them drowsy.

I was so mad because sitting at home on my counter was my little ready made pharmacy of the stuff my kids can take no problem instead of with us in WDW and since we did not have a car, we tried to make due. That is the one time in our marriage that I told DH "I told you so!!!!!!"

I never actually shared what I bring: here is the list...
  • benadryl to help with sleep
  • OTC cold & sinus meds
  • pepto tablets
  • excedrin
  • bayoer aspirin for DH...that is all he will take
  • bandaids
  • neosporin
  • infant tylenol cold
  • infant motrin
  • imodium
I may only bring travel size portions. The infant meds are one size but they are small anyway. Oh--almost forgot--airborne & saline spray. Saline spray is a cure all for allergies...together with airborne it can stop a cold in its tracks. I basically keep this in an eagle creek bag and it stays in my suitcase all of the time. Hope this helps...
