What lens do you walkaround with?

After several years in the PnS world I've just stepped into the DSLR world (Canon 10D) and have a trip coming up in Dec. I'm looking for recommendations for a walkaround lens that will also be useful for the most popular types of shots. I currently have a 28-80 f3.5 and a 50mm f1.8.

Any thoughts?

my walk around lens is the canon 24-70 f/2.8 L it is a little pricey though. The Sigma version that deleated penguin recommends is also very nice.

Ya, the L lens is extremely nice and is one of the best lenses out there in that focal range (you definitely get what you pay for), but for 1/3 of the price, the Sigma is considerably better than others in its price range. The Canon lens is very sharp and fast, but I personally think the Sigma colors rival those of the Canon.

For my Nikon, my prime lens is the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX. I love having the ability to go w i d e.

Thanks for the replies and the suggestions. Unfortunatley I can't fit Canon L glass into the budget at this point. I have heard great things about the Sigma lenses el;sewhere also so I may have to look at them. I'm thinking I may need something a little wider than what I have.

Exercise? What's that?

I also use the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 as my primary walk-around. I used to use the 28-135. Another good option is the new 24-105 IS.

all fit in a nice smallish bag for travel

I like the IS lens overlap. You do not have to switch lenses as much.

I use the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8, I tested the Sigma 24-70 but the copy I used did not seem as sharp wide open.

I use my 50mm 1.4 a good bit but I am not sure if I will want to use it at Disney.. The pics would be good but the prime lens can be a pitb for certain things..lol I also have the Tamron 28-75 which I like too but again, not sure I want to carry that one around Disney either as it is larger and i am taking my smallerst bag..haha

All this leaves is my cheaper kit lens which is a smaller size and still has zoom but the pics are not as good.

Sooo.. I am not sure which one I will be walking around with on this trip.

i like the range of the 28-135 as well as a walk around. i usually take that on the camera, then in the bag my 70-200 and 10-17. but usually i use the 28 or 200..i really like details( which is why i really like the 200, i can get nice close up shots with it from 4 ft away) more than overall views though so part of it depends imo on what you like to shoot and where you are going. the only thing i don't care for on the 28 is the lack of good low light capabilities but you can't have everything for a "budget" price

just wondering though unless i missed it, what don't you like about the 28-80 you have? and i think canon is coming out with a new ??-200 in the fall that would be more of a walk around if it's a decent lens and give you more distance.

The 28-80 is great except that I would like it to be a little wider for better panoramic/overall shots in the parks etc...I'm not to concerned about the distance for now, however the fall is good timing for Canon to come out with a new lens as my next trip is in late Nov!

Not sure of the specs on the new Canon lens. I have the Nikon 18-200 lens and it is a perfect "walk around" lens for Disney. I can get the wide angle shots and zoom in on my family without having to change lenses. The IQ of the Nikon lens is pretty good considering the focal range it covers. The Nikon lens is on the expensive side, but not a bad value when you consider that you would have to buy two lenses to cover that focal range otherwise. I also carry the 50mm 1.8 for low light shots. The Nikon lens has been pretty popular, so Canon may be introducing a lens in that range. For convenience, it is pretty hard to beat. I think Sigma may have recently introduced a lens in that range as well with OS. May be worth a look.

My kit consists of the Canon 50mm F/1.8, Canon 70-300IS and the Canon 17-85IS.

Ive just come back from a trip to New York City and used the 17-85 95% of the time. It did a pretty good job.

This will be my first year to WDW with my DSLR and kit - I go next month and intend to take the same kit as New York, but I will probably use my 70-300IS a lot more as I like to take detail shots and like the long reach of this lens.

I think it depends on your style of shooting which lens you prefer. I know many people wouldnt even take a large zoom to WDW, others would prefer something much wider than anything in my bag (and Ive been tempted with the Sigma 10-20mm!). For a general walkabout, then Im pretty happy with the 17-85IS. IDEALLY, Id like Canon to produce a quality, image stabilised mid priced lens like the Nikon 18-200VR as this would be just about perfect for me!

yes, that new Sigma lens with the OS is the one I use.

I use this 95% of the time. Switch to a faster lens for indoors if I can't use a flash.
