What kind of wildlife do you have around your home?

Squirrel, rabbits, fox, coyote, snakes, raccoons, oppossum,

And lots and lots of deer. This is a bad time of year for them to be running across the road. So many accidents because of them. DS16 is a new driver. I have told him several times if one crosses the road in front of you WAIT! 90% of the time at least one more will follow.
When my DS was a newer driver he delivered pizza. Well, he looked at his phone for directions and drove over a dead deer on the highway ! I was like how can you not see a deer!?

We are also in MA and have conservation land on two sides so we see quite a bit of wildlife but I’ve never seen a live bear in the area ! We have the usual deer, pesky raccoons , skunk, fox, coyote , a million rabbits, possum etc but after 34 years in this house I never knew we had flying squirrels until we caught them on camera!
I'm in western MA, and the only time I've actually seen a bear was when one walked right through my parents backyard one afternoon. Their backyard is only about 10 feet wide before turning into a steep hill, so the bear was right there. It was so quiet the dogs didn't even notice, my dad only saw because he happened to be looking out the back slider at the right time.
I have seen their poo when walking in the woods a few times, though.

Squirrels are plentiful here, the dog loves to hate them :rotfl2:

Man, I scared a poor squirrel this morning when I came around the corner of my house to toss out some garbage. He was on the brick and I guess not expecting company. He actually squealed at me before running up to the roof! They usually keep their distance of course, but I don't think this one sensed that I was coming. I am generally squirrel friendly though.

No bears here. As for the more interesting stuff...
  • Alligators- We don't see them as often in our current neighborhood, but they used to love the little lakes and retention ponds when we lived on the other side of town.
  • Coyotes- We'll periodically see or hear some lone ones, but since moving to this side of town, we'll hear family groups vocalizing while on the move at night.
  • Owls- Most of the time it's barred owls. They have a really distinctive call and they seem to love one of the trees right near my window. We'll also sometimes hear great horned owls, but they don't come out as often.
  • River Otters- I've only seen one, but some people that live along the water a few blocks away see them all the time.
  • Bald Eagles- I'll occasionally see them circling overhead, but I've had to be closer to water in the neighborhood to see them on the ground.
  • Bobcats- I've seen a few near the more densely forested areas by our house, but it seems to be only the people right on top of those spots that get them in their yards.
  • Armadillos- Always see them in the road.
  • Wild Hogs- These guys are scary, destructive, and they're big.
  • Crawfish- We don't usually see them, but you see their presence with all of the little crawfish mounds in the dirt/mud...even a ways away from water.
Beyond that, it's pretty normal stuff...racoons, squirrels, rabbits, skunks, deer, turtles, snakes, lizards, salamanders, frogs/toads (love the tree frogs), regional songbirds, coastal birds, smaller birds of prey, bats, muskrats and possums. This possum has been hanging around our porch for a while now.

Live in a subdivision among many in a big suburban area of a major city. Sadly the constant construction has narrowed the living space for our critter friends.

We have all the traditional squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, snakes, birds, turtles ....

We would randomly see the deer wandering mostly at night but when COVID shut down happened our eyes were opened. As they realized there were few cars out they became very brave about wandering and nibbling during the day. I loved it! So I ordered a bunch of cameras and installed them. We have a camera on front right corner of house in area we call the "Deer Diner" and I feed them every night. We have camera on front door that catches them in our front yard. We are 6-8 ft fenced in our very large backyard but it doesn't stop our small friends. We did have a deer jump the fence so we had to assist them out the singular gate. We have a camera in "lower forty" on a bridge to catch the animals crossing through our yard. Every night we have video of our fox family, raccoons, possums and rabbits. And during the day our dogs and squirrels. Our deer diner camera catches foxes, raccoons, cats, rabbits, possum and we have seen coyotes.

While we've never seen we have occasional bear reports usually from police trying to escort them to safety.

I love my deer diner, the other night there were 6 eating, anywhere from 1 to 10 have been out there. We see the babies born each year, almost always twins and get to watch them grow up. I had a very disabled deer - Warrior - that I loved so much and got to see him fairly up close myself. He's been gone a year now, I assume met with a vehicle that he couldn't out run. :sad2:

The animals were a huge part of making COVID shutdown doable and three plus years later I am still serving up dinner daily as well as planting lots of hosta and other plants they love to nibble. Last night was diced apples and fresh green beans. Night before they loved their huge helping of grapes. They know me, they stand and wait for me to put it out and life goal is to hand feed one!

Usually deer, coyotes, skunks, squirrels, etc. We had a fox family with 4 or 5 babies this past spring that was soooo much fun to watch.

And the occasional bear. This photo was ironically taken by my parents while they were here watching our kids while DH and I were in Yellowstone for our anniversary. We did NOT see any bears in Yellowstone that trip.

One of the sweetest posts I've seen in a long time. I love the way you care for those beautiful creatures.

Thank you! I need them more than they need me. ❤️ Hard to put in to words but the world feels so unsafe to me, I stay home a lot more and them coming around to me just makes each day a little bit better.

I enjoy giving them the fancy food that keeps them coming back. It is usually veggies/fruit past what we will eat or the scraps when I am cutting off what we won't eat. I do buy bags of apples for them but dice them up small kernel size. They do LOVE the rind of melons so I buy those and dice them up as well. We also have a veggie garden we get things we won't eat but they will. Even my grumpy stepdad has softened to the critters and brings me veggies from his garden. Backyard critters just help themselves to whatever is there and the garden, sometimes sneaking out front. I also have lots of bird and bee houses, bird feeders, hummingbird feeders - whatever I can add.

Our front yard is a recognised wildlife preserve so we love the flora and fauna that spends time there.

We also have bird feeders which have sometimes been invaded by squirrels. But given to the unique layout of our estate, we also see foxes and other animals. They are a lot of fun to have here. The only time it has been an issue is when I Wak out to the barn to get firewood at 2 AM in January and I see a host of eyes staring back at me. That can be unnerving!

The turkeys are getting very aggressive ! They came at you when you go for a walk.

Not around here. They're not scared of people, but they're generally not aggressive. I've walked by them many times and they might not get out of one's way but they don't approach anyone either.

I've heard the males can be aggressive during mating season, but even then I've seen them strutting but still avoiding people. Must be the mild weather or something.

Oh my 👀 I know sometimes my videos pick up those lit up eyes and I can't tell what it is.

We are getting ready to submit our back yard for the National Wildlife Certified Wildlife Habitat! 💚

A lot of squirrels, with some chipmunks, deer, and skunks.

Just outside my office, geese seem to love walking around, but I never see them near my house.

Squirrels and small birds (Robyns, cardinals, sparrows..), and the occasional garden snake. We see deer, armadillo, and opossum along nearby roads. One in a blue moon we’ll see a coyote or fox.

Lots of birds. Geese that fly over in V formation every day. Turkeys, deer, and I have coyotes howling out back at this very moment.
