What kind of job do you do from home?

I need to get a job, but really want to work from home. I've worked for a company for 22 years doing data entry, but now everything is being done in the office. I was going in there a day or two a week, but business is so slow, I haven't been down there in two months. I was wondering what experiences others have had working from home. Do you sell things, do surveys, be a mystery shopper...? Does anyone do data entry from home ? Not looking to get rich, just need about $500 a month to add to husband's income.

I work for ChaCha from home. For some more info go here: http://becomeaguide.chacha.com/ We are currently hiring. I just posted this on another thread. Some love it, some hate it. I love it. I have been doing this for the last year and a half. I don't make a ton of money but I make enough to cover what I need/want it too. This is what allows me to be a stay at home mom for right now. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

I have a full time job but I also ChaCha from home (ChaCha is a service that people text questions to, they are then sent to people that are logged on to their system from their own personal computers, and those people edit/quick answer the question (expeditors job) or do more research and answer it (specialist). They also have transcribers (there's a 1-800# people can call and ask questions on then the transcribers send the questions to specialists). When I first started I was a Specialist but wasn't making very much money. I switched to being an Expeditor and usually make $150 or so a month doing it 1-2 hours a day. They've changed the way pay works with new people joining ChaCha into a points structure so I don't really know how that works. I believe they are hiring currently. You would just need to go to their website (chacha.com) and fill out a form, then they have you take a test, etc. I like it because it's easy to do while watching TV or whatever and you can work as little or as much as you want.

I also do surveys (about $1 a survey) and use a cash back site for shopping online that I make about $20-$40 a month doing. It's against DIS rules to name the site for some reason.

Both of these I could obviously make more money if I spent more time doing them. I tried mystery shopping but they were almost always McDonald's shops and to get paid $7 to eat (taste) nasty, fattening food and spend an hour or so doing paperwork and being very exact with stopwatch times (like how long it took from the time you pull up to the drive-thru speaker until someone answered, how long it took from the time you placed your order until you got to the first window, how long it got from the time it took to get from the first window to the second, etc.) and who everyone's names are that helps you, etc., it wasn't worth it to me.

I would check rewards board disboards. There thread on I think call 75 gift cards start by harveygirl. It has a lot good information on it. It is not survey sites but paid to click sites where get gift cards and money for clicks.

I know start simplegpt and made 25.00 dollars less than two weeks. Will get rich no. But does help. I was looking for extra part time job this what I am doing.

crazelion~ can you tell me more about simplegpt? What do you have to do? How do they pay? What is the cashout? Thanks!

I used to do Melaleuca as a biz but didn't really have enough time/energy to keep pushing that forward but got up to a D3 and still as a customer and not having done anything "biz" wise in 5+ years still make enough per month to cover my products.

Now I work for myself designing jewelry, mainly for photographers but have regular clients too, and I run my own website and occasionally put something up on Etsy. I took my loves and basically created a business for myself that could work around my schedule. The only thing there is you have to love what you do and be very motivated to keep pushing even when your not in a mood to work. ;)

I currently work at home for a major television retailer based in Central Florida. They are currently hiring for work at home reps -- easiest, most reliable work at home job ever!! In fact, I'm working right now - and playing on my laptop -- it is New Year's Eve and not many folks calling in.

I'm also contracted with a company called Arise. Check them out -- I'm currently in a training class and will be servicing that client next week. So, I'm not sure what that will be like, but I"m sure it will be magical!!

Good Luck!!:thumbsup2

I sell Isagenix - a nutritional cleansing program. Let me know if you want more info about how to get started.

I am a writer - I write for magazines, newspapers, our local university, and other organizations. I've also co-written several books. I make a good living this way. It takes some skill, creativity, plus a lot of hard work, and it isn't always easy, but I love doing it.

I'd love to get more info on this as well. Did I read correctly that Arise requires quite a financial investment to get started? TIA!

Teresa, how did you get started as a writer? I would be interested in pursuing something like this. I googled your name and saw some of the titles that are attributed to you. I assume you have some sort of advanced education regarding the topics you write about.

I am a professional and have been working in my field for many years. I would like to know how to share my knowledge, as well as pad my checking account through publishing. But I'm not clear on how to get started.

I work for kgb and also do simple. Both are great. Not fabulous pay, but extra money.

With simple I have made about 350 since the beginning of Nov. With kgb I have made 900 since mid Aug..

Beware of Arise and Metaluca. I beleive both ask for money upfront. I know Metaluca is all about selling a product and you are required to buy so mcuh yourself each month. In all the work from home forums, this is something you never want to do.
Crowd Cloud was also one that looked good, but they have really slowed down with work, so many aren't doing much there.
Also check out Mturks. I have made over 100 there doing it off and on.
If you have any questions what so ever feel free to PM me.

There are probably many different routes to getting started as a writer. I know many writers and each one could tell you a different story.

Here's one approach you could try. You mention that you are a professional and have information to share - that is hugely valuable. So I'd suggest you start making some lists:

1. topics you'd like to write about
2. potential audiences (ie. seniors, new parents, women, men, snowboarders, owners of small businesses, etc.) Just list all the groups who might be interested in one or more of the topics that you want to write about.
3. publications that those audiences read

Pick one or two to start with. Let's say - just making something up - that you are a police officer and you have a lot of information on how to make your home safer. And you think seniors would be interested. But you don't know what seniors read.

So - you head down to the library or one of the big bookstores and grab a bunch of magazines aimed at seniors. What you want to do is analyze what the editors are looking for in articles. Some magazines publish mostly profiles - articles that tell about a specific person. Some do a lot of "how-to" articles. Some like first-person stories. You'll also want to look at things like article length, and how many experts are quoted in a typical article.

From there, you can create a proposal to send to the editor (called a "query" or "pitch.") There are whole books on how to write these, but basically you want to tell the editor what you want to write and why you should be the one to write it.

Let's say, for example, you find a magazine for seniors that has a lot of how-to articles of a practical nature, and you think they might be interested in something on making your home safer. The articles are fairly short, though, so you will need to narrow the topic. Let's say you decide to focus on inexpensive tips to make the outside of your home safer. (I am just making this up...) And you notice that the articles usually have one or two experts quoted, so you think about who you might interview for the piece. And they usually also include a dramatic story involving a senior. So you put all that together in your query, which might read like this.

"Shirley Smith, 70, was nervous about living alone. But she was surprised and pleased to find out that painting her house pink was an inexpensive and effective way to deter potential burglars. Not only that, by adding garden gnomes in a particular pattern, she made her home even safer. Home safety expert John Jones recommended these and five other budget-friendly ways to make your outdoors protect you and your home.

I've been a police officer for ten years and have seen many of the mistakes people make in trying to keep their homes safer. I'd like to suggest an article for Old People Magazine that would share tips from John Jones and from retired burglar Steve Saunders on how to deter criminals without spending a lot of money. I expect the article to run about 800 words."

Then you'd close with a polite salutation, and email it off to the editor. Don't mention, by the way, that you haven't had anything published before! Just stress the aspects of your background that make you the right person to do the article.

While you are waiting to hear back, put together the next query to the next publication. (And don't forget websites - some do pay!)

There are lots of courses you can take to get started in writing, as well. Paul Lima, a Canadian writer, has some good online ones (just google his name) and some inexpensive e-books. Your local college might offer some too. Or look for a writer's group to join.

Hope that helps! I love writing!

Before I had children I worked in publishing... and after I had the kids I was able to pursue some contacts and that is what I have done from home for the past 9+ yrs. I edit educational textbooks - and over the past year or so indexing has become somewhat of a specialty of mine (LOL - unintentional specialty). In the past, publishing companies have given out tests for people to take who are interested in editing. It is hard to get into - but if you have any connections or know anyone, that is also a place to start. (oh - and I never edit my e-mails - LOL!)

The subject matter isn't always that exciting either - but the work for me has been steady. A year ago I also got a part-time job outside of the home because all my kids are in school full-day now and I wanted to do something different... so I work at a college now too. I love doing both jobs - though sometimes the freelance schedule isn't that accommodating.

Good luck!

I work for the Trump Network. It is a multi level marketing company. I have been in it for almost 1 year and make about $500 a month. I do use the products, that's why I got involved in the first place, but you don't have to. We are getting alot of professional MLM people signing on because of Donald Trump and where the company is positioned. I'm planning on replacing my husband's income in the next 6 months(he has been laid off for 7 months now)!

Isagenix is also a MLM company. I do use their products and that is how I got involved. I make more than enough to cover the cost of the product I buy (and use) each month plus enough more to make it worth my time.

The earning potential with Isagenix is awesome. I continue to make more and more each month.
