What kind of car do you drive down with...

We have a Toyota Echo...have driven to Florida once with it already. No problems with it at all...and it's considerably bigger than it looks.
I don't drive. My vision is on the knife-edge of acceptability, and I never got a license. I have an actual driving phobia--there isn't a word for that in English, which is weird, because there's a word for fear of <insert silly thing here>. How you people can ever be *bored* while navigating around thousands of tons of onrushing death every day, piloted by people with half an eye on the road...utterly mystifies me.
DW does all the driving, and does it cheerfully. She's looking forward to her first trip to the World in T-22 days and counting...and the drive down is definitely part of the trip.

We take our late model Chrysler Town and Country when driving down to DL, which is around 1300 miles from us. A reliable, and comfortable vehicle to drive. We both trade off on the driving, however I won't drive the Grapevine after the last trip (darn Santa Ana winds!!).

I know the OP is decided, but I wanted to give a mention to my current vehicle. I have had a Kia Rondo V6 for 3 years now. It is classified as a micro-van in Europe; North America doesn't really know how to classify it.

The vehicle is a workhorse and very versatile. In my attempt to be eco-concious, it was the smallest and most fuel efficient vehicle that met all my needs:
  • Holds 7 people (but little cargo space with back seats open)
  • Tows 3500 pounds (we have a mid-size camper)
  • Has lots of cargo flexibility
  • Gets under 10l/100km hwy (unladen)
  • Comfortable for long trips (regularly travel 5+ hrs to Muskoka or camping)

We don't generally have the time to drive to Florida (we actually did consider it this year), but I would have no qualms about driving Kirby (my kids named him :confused3) down.

Our last trip was done with our 04 Suburban. We could have saved fuel by using the wifes 07 Escape but it's not as comfie as mine so we took the gas guzzler.

Hello everyone,
We are in the process of changing the family car. We are thinking of purchasing a toyota corrolla or a nissan sentra. We also plan to drive down in August with the family. How was your experience driving with thes cars??? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you :surfweb:

From the looks of your sig you should be fine. But if you were bringing kids then I wouls say no way in h=ck! I've made long road trips with 3 guys in a small vehicle (Sunfire convertible) and we didnt have any extra room for souvenirs unless they were piled on the passenger in the back (which ended up being me!) and it was AWFUL! especially with the top down...

but small cars are quite comfy up front because that is where they are designed to pamper, they are generally for people to either commute or have small children who cant complain about the crampiness of the situation yet!!!

The way I look at it is this. If it holds all your luggage and you are comfy, then it is perfect and GTG...

I just realized that this thread is nearly a year old!!!

So how did the OP like the larger vehicle for the trip?

Now that you have used it once (maybe even twice for a longhaul) are you glad you increased your cabin space?

This will be our 4th time driving as we flew the first year. The first 3 years we drove my DF car, a Sebring Convertable and there was 3 of us. My DD did not like the 2 door at all. I had a Sunfire so that was out of the question to take, but last year I bought a 2008 Jeep Patriot. What a great car! It is so roomie and my daughter loves it. So we are 3 happy campers :dance3:
