What is your favorite "story" song?

I'm surprised noone has mentioned that one by the charlie daniels band " the devil went down to Georgia" I don't like country music much, but I just love that one

ooohhh, I just thought of another great one.. Piano Man, by Billy Joel. When my dad was alive he use to love that one.

I'd have to go with Scenes From an Italian Restaurant too. DH just said "Phantom 309" by Red Sovine. LOL He has a habit of collecting cheezy music to torture me with. I shouldn't have even asked him because now he is playing it.

He wants me to add "Margo's Cargo" by Stompin' Tom Connors as well. If we ever get divorced, I can claim his music as a reason I'm sure. ;)

My favorites are from Reba McEntire:

The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia
Fancy
Is There Life Out There
What Do You Say

Starry, Starry Night! Okay, it's not exactly a "story" song, but it does sort of tell the story of the artist Vincent van Gogh's life. I've read several books about him (even did my HS senior term paper on him), and everytime I hear this song, it makes me a little bit sad.

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and grey
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colours on the snowy linen land

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds and violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
Colours changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artists' loving hand

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you

Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They're not listening still
Perhaps they never will...

I agree with all those who have mentioned:
Scenes from an Italian Restaurant
Copa Cabana
Taxi
Devil Went Down to Georgia
Vincent
Escape

Can't beleive nobody mentioned:
Tie a Yellow Ribbon
Paradise By the Dashboard light

And two others that nobody mentioned:
The Night Chicago Died
Brandy

Love, Me by Collin Raye

I read a note my grandma wrote
Back in nineteen twenty-three.
Grandpa kept it in his coat,
And he showed it once to me.

He said,
"Boy, you might not understand,
But a long, long time ago,
Grandma's daddy didn't like me none,
But I loved your Grandma so."

We had this crazy plan to meet
And run away together.
Get married in
The first town we came to,
And live forever.

But nailed to the tree
Where we were supposed to meet,
Instead of her, I found this letter,
And this is what it said:

If you get there before I do,
Don't give up on me.
I'll meet you when
My chores are through;
I don't know how long I'll be.
But I'm not gonna let you down,
Darling wait and see.
And between now and then,
Till I see you again,
I'll be loving you.
Love, me.

I read those words just hours before
My Grandma passed away,
In the doorway of a church
Where me and Grandpa stopped to pray.

I know I'd never seen him cry
In all my fifteen years;
But as he said these words to her,
His eyes filled up with tears.

If you get there before I do,
Don't give up on me.
I'll meet you when
My chores are through;
I don't know how long I'll be.
But I'm not gonna let you down,
Darling wait and see.
And between now and then,
Till I see you again,
I'll be loving you.
Love, me.

Between now and then,
Till I see you again,
I'll be loving you.
Love, me.
