Essentially, that's all it does. If I'm not mistaken, it does it on the hour, so maybe like a Big Ben? My buddy and I are AP holders so when we're in Tommorowland, the park guests stop what they're doing to stare in awe, while we just walk past because we've seen it so many times...
In all of my many trips to Disneyland I have never seen this . I can't believe we have missed it every time! I am going to make a special point to watch it this next trip in May.
There used to be a ride up there called the rocket jets. You can see them/read about them on Yesterland (a website of all things discontinued at Disneyland).
Yep, when they re-did TL back in '98, the Rocket Jets were moved down to the ground level at the entrance and re-themed/named the Astro Orbiter. What you see there uses the original spinner infrastructure of the Rocket Jets to move around every hour and play some "spacey" music.
The Rocket Jets landed up on that platform back in the TL redo of 1967, on top of the old Peoplemover station, which became the Rocket Rods station in the 98 redo, but quickly closed due to performance issues.
Me too - I don't like going on it now. Even though it was still just like Dumbo, but space themed - when it was up on the platform vs. down on the ground, it just somehow felt so much different!
