What is this Little Guy Doing??

I can't hide my ignorance any longer. Exactly what is this little smilie guy supposed to respresent. His little lable says he is embarrassed and his cheeks are red. Sometimes he seems to be used to show shock or disbelief. I have also seen him used like he is yawning or bored. My DS says he looks like he is singing!

So what is his purpose in life?
