Cast Member Previews of various Park and Resort facilities are meant to serve as a "test run" for the facility before opening to Guests. In addition, they also provide product knowledge in view of allowing Cast Members to better respond to Guest inquiries. Finally, they are one of the many Cast Member-exclusive offerings that form part of the advantages of working for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts U.S., Inc.

Well it is a lot easier for a CM to tell a guest about a restaurant they ate at than one they did not.

It is also a good way to do a test run.

And I assume it is a nice perk for underpaid CMs who have to put up with unhappy guests on occassion.

Practice for the CMs working the restaurant before the guests arrive so that the place runs smoothly when it opens to the "public".

Other restaurants do this too - invite people to come to a pre-opening so you can see if everything working properly and running smoothly.

Every restaurant run an employee and friends nite before opening to give cooks a chance to cook orders in a random order and servers to actually serve people. Would you go to a play that never had a dress rehearsal? That's all this is, a chance to perform the way you'll be expected to for the guests.

Yup - as a cook, I can assure you every restaurant NEEDS a soft opening. You really don't want to be there when the new dishwashers and bussers are still trying to figure out how to stack the plates correctly for the cooks to use them and servers to move around everyone else - it's just not pretty when it goes wrong. And yes, it's a treat to all the other workers around - our restaurant hosted the soft openings for the chefs and families of the other restaurants in our restaurant group, and it's a really sweet thing to be able to serve the people you're with in the industry, since you've most likely worked with them before or will soon after.
