Two people recently asked me to tutor their children. I have never tutored nor do I really know anyone who has/does. I don't have a clue what to charge. I am in my seventh year of teaching. I've taught sixth grade reading, writing and social studies. I've also taught first grade. I have my master's degree too. I don't know if any of those things factor into the price. I know the price of tutoring varies by region, but I'd like to just get an idea before I name a price and they look at me like I'm crazy. I was thinking $15/hour, but I casually mentioned it at lunch today and my co-workers thought that was way too low. Now I'm thinking maybe $20/hour. I'm at a loss. Any suggestions?

Wow! We've been looking into a tutor for my 3rd grader and the teachers here charge $40/hr. Can you come down to GA and tutor my daughter?:goodvibes

Yep...higher. I tutored through a high school last year and they charge $35 per hour. The best thing was the school took care of billing and collecting. They just put the extra $ in my paycheck, and didn't take a cut. I got the whole $35 per hour!

I live outside of DC and charge $50 / hour. When I first started teaching 7 years ago, I charged $40, but now that I have my Masters degree and more experience I brought my rates up. I know of other teachers who charge $60 and pressure me to do the same so they don't seem "expensive" but I feel like $50 is fair.

We are in the midwest and pay $25 an hour for a math tutor for a sophomore. We do think he under prices himself considering we pay $70 for a baseball hitting coach and $80 for a pitching coach. Both are excellent coaches but has always bothered me that we pay IMO the most important "coach" in our child's life the least.

Way too low. We live in Kansas and 15 years ago we paid $20 an hour for a tutor for high school math.

We live in CA. We pay 60.00 for 50 min. for Precalulus. 50.00 for 50 min. Algebra 2, for second and third grade spelling/LA we pay 42.00 for 50 min.

I charge $45 an hour in NJ and the student comes either to my house or my local library.

I currently pay someone $30/hour for in home tutoring. I've seen it range from $30-$125/hr depending on area, education, content (elementary-college).

I'm in south Alabama. My school offers after school tutoring 2 days a week for an hour each day. The school has a grant and uses it to pay the teachers, so it's free for the parents. The school pays us $25 an hour. We're in a very rural area area.......my school literally sits in the middle of a cotton field..........so I'd be surprised if our parents could even afford the $25! I guess the rate would really depend on where you live.

1st grade teacher here with 21 years experience & Master's degree.

I would charge $40.00/hour with a minimum of 2 hours/week if the child is below grade level. (Some parents hire tutors to help their on grade level children "keep up", which one hour/week may be sufficient....but for a child who is struggling, at least 2 hours/week would be required to see marked progress).

We're about 10 miles from the Kissing Tower! DH is a HS Teacher and he gets about $30-35/hour for upper level math and science. We've gotten tutors for our son in reading and it was $20-25/hour from 4th-6th grade. I definitely agree $15 is too low in any subject.

Northern California here - if I can get a credentialled teacher who has experience teaching the correct grade to tutor DD11 for $40/hour, I'm thrilled. And that's with....ummmm...let's just say a "cash transaction". I have had a few offer to do it a bit cheaper, if I fit their schedule instead of them having to fit ours, if we agree up front to a certain number of weeks, etc.

What I don't get are the college kids, with no credentials and who aren't even studying education, who think they should get $30-$40/hour :confused3 Thanks but no thanks - I'm more qualified than you to tutor my kid (at least I HAVE a degree already), and I'm free!!!

I am currently attending community college in IL, and have class Wednesday and Thursday nights. I saw a post on our community events board on Thursday that wasn't there Wednesday for a math/science tutor for $20 per hour. All of the little rippie tab thingies were gone... :thumbsup2 My husband is a math/science/English/SAT tutor and charges $50 per hour...

Hi, I would check with the office at your school to see if they have an idea of the going rate in your area. Our district has a list of recommended tutors (all teachers in the district) and the standard rate when we used a tutor four years ago was $60 an hour.

At the university my DS2 attends, the undergrad students who are employed by the "official" university-tutoring service get $30 an hour (DS2 informally tutors Calculus for $20 an hour).
