What is the deal with Toll roads in FL?

It can be done, although you would run into lots of traffic lights and/or take a more circuitous route. One such toll free route is I-95 north to Melbourne and then west on Rte 192.

A few toll plazas in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area (on Florida's Turnpike) require electronic toll paying, no cash accepted. The Sunpass is the most popular of the three Florida toll payment systems and is accepted at all plazas. (None of the Florida systems can be used out of state nor can other states' systems be used in Florida.)

You could take I-75 west about 15-20 miles (depends where you are in Ft Lauderdale) them north on US-27 to I-4 (about 180 miles) then east on I-4 to WDW maingates about 6-8 miles depending on where your heading to. Just follow the signs for WDW parks/resorts when you get to Orlando. It took us about 4 hours to drive this from Miami last year.

I don't recommend Rte 192. That would take forever!

Wow, that's crazy. How does a state turnpike that has so many tourists not offer a cash lane? :headache: To me, that is not very tourist-friendly.

In Miami/Dade, you can either use Sunpass or you will be billed at the end of the month (plus a 2.50 fee). They have totally cashless tolling at this time.

Because under Charlie Crist's administration, toll collectors were history's greatest monsters and had to be liquidated.

The Homestead Extension doesn't really get that much tourist traffic. Also too, you can get the stick-on Sun Pass for $5, which is going to cost you less than the mark-up on the rental car's transponders.

The stick on pass can't be transferred from one vehicle to another. And I believe that you pay 5.00 plus tolls. I am going to try the billing by month when I go to Miami. It is 2.50 per month plus tolls.

Yes, I couldn't believe total cashless! Really not a good thing for tourism. I read it in a handout when we were at the 95 welcome center in March! There should always be a cash lane or at least not great surcharges like they have for those not having a pass! Especially in a great tourist state like FL! Luckily we didn't have to drive on the cash free toll road! What happened to cash for all debts!

And will probably tick off the rental car company, as I suspect they are not easy to remove.

Most rental car companies now participate in toll-by-plate, and some charge very low fees to do so. For example, National/Alamo/Enterprise charge $2 plus tolls on each day you pass through a toll-by-plate toll both, with a maximum of $6 across the entire rental period. $6 plus tolls for an entire vacation seems pretty reasonable to me.

Other companies do charge more. Here is a summary:

Yes, IF you know about it in advance. I would think anyone other than residents wouldn't know they should stop in a store to buy an adhesive toll paying device. :rolleyes1

I looked into it when we were visiting Orlando often. It cost $5.00 but has a toll credit of $5.00.

So now tourists will need to add to their packing list a painter's type razor/scraper. Or maybe just stop at Home Depot to buy a scraper and some acetone.

Sounds to me like someone who is high up in the Dept of Transportation is married to someone high up at a rental car comapny. ;)

The whole idea is insane.

Note that I haven't tried this with a Sun Pass, but I've purchased decal toll stickers in other places that I haven't wanted to permanantly affix to my car. We just carefully used some really good clear packing tape and attached sticker to decal, then used a minimum of less sticky tape clear to attach the decal to the car windshield, then peeled it off when we were done.
