What is the deal with bathroom attendants?

I recently was at a conference and in the bathroom there was an attendant sitting in there. A co-worker was all upset because she needed to (well, you know) and she did not want to with this woman sitting in there. I don't blame her! I would be mortified to have to do that knowing someone was just sitting there waiting for you to come out.

So what about you? Would it bug you?

I suppose you could tip her to leave the room! :rotfl2:

ETA - if she won't leave, make sure to do a courtesy flush.

I've only seen a bathroom attendant once and it was in New Orleans. I was shocked, fascinated and appalled all at the same time. I do not see the necessity and agree that their presence could be awkward in some situations.

Just tell your friend what I told DS when he was in High School and the presence of other students or the locker room setting led to the same concerns. Repeatedly flush while doing your business.

I don't normally "do" that sort of thing in public bathrooms, but if I had to I would. The attendant is usually off the main stall area anyway.

If you ever go to a Broadway show, bathroom attendants are the norm. I've also seen them at higher end restaurants. (My biggest concern is whether I have money for the tip jar.)

It doesn't bother me but then and again, I can't do "you know" in a public bathroom whether it's empty or not. :scared1:

Believe it or not, the Wisconsin State fairgrounds have them in every single bathroom. There is always a long line, and the attendant yells to you which stall to go into as they empty. Like you can't see that for yourself! It is absolutely ridiculous. The attendant usually puts a comb and a can of hairspray next to the sink too! I can't imagine anyone actually using them, but that's just me. She always has a tip jar near the door too, stuffed with $1 and $5 billls that she no doubt has placed there herself since I can't imagine anyone tipping her $5.00! :sad2:

I was thinking the same thing. They say the bathrooms are supposed to be cleaner and stocked better with them in there. I can't say that I notice a difference. I never tip either. For as many times as I visit the bathroom at the fair, I would go broke!

If Sleepy shows up, she'll confirm this...There are parts of Italy where you'd love to have an attendant. Actually, you'd love to have a seat, more to the point, you'd really be thrilled with toilet paper!!!

It's been a long time since I've lived there, but I still never leave home w/o a purse pack of tissues. They don't supply toilet paper...that's a personal problem. :rolleyes1

On the plus side, at least the public toilets here have seats....in southern Italy someone always steals them, and you're left to be a hovercraft....:rotfl: :rotfl:

Oh, and as far as anything but a quick wee...forget it. You've a hovercraft, remember???? :)

:rotfl2: :lmao: Are you kidding me??????

Kristine

No, I'm not....I hope Sleepy shows up...she'll confirm. The first time I went into a public bathroom in Naples, Italy, of course it was "stripped" of everything, I nearly died. I did finally perfect my hover abilities....Hidden talent, I guess.

I hover all the time. No way will I park my rear on a public toilet.

Or at least it's not England, where you have to pay in public washrooms and often only get so much time.

Attendants wouldn't bother me. I'm sure they've heard it all. :)

I've only seen them a few times, but they don't bother me a bit! Anyone taking that kind of job has to expect some unusual sounds and scents, I gotta figure they're used to it.

Kind of like when your pregnant and you perfect the whole peeing in a cup thing.:lmao:

Yes, that drives me crazy at the WI State Fair! Thank you bathroom attendant lady, I could see for myself that someone just came out of stall #3. I didn't need you to let me know that I could now proceed into it, just so I can give you a tip on the way out :P

I can understand why they would have one for crowd management. I can't tell you the number of times I've gone into a women's washroom to see a line of people waiting for some stalls. After waiting in it for a minute, I go start looking for feet. About 6 times out of 10, there will be empty stalls and a line. :confused3
