What is the "best" chat program?

Many years ago I used mIRC, but I was wondering if there was something better/easier/more fun, etc. I'm more of a lurker than a chatter, but what are your suggestions for a good program when I'm in the mood to chat? I also used powwow back in the days when it was new, but it's so busy now that I can hardly keep up with all of the activity.

I really like the user-friendliness of AOL's Instant Messenger. I use ICQ on rare occasions, but I definately prefer Instant Messenger.
Actually, there is a program that is called Trillian that combines the Big 5 chats and it user friendly too. But to me, it is best used if you are registered to a couple of chat programs.
