What Is So Great About A Bed & Breakfast?

My late DH & I stayed in one - for exactly ONE night (even though we had booked for a week) - in Rockport, MA.. We just couldn't take it - felt like we had checked into a Senior Citizens center.. It was not a good experience..

DD's IL's love them - but they're older, so maybe it's more appealing to them..

I think the only way I would consider trying one again would be if it were in Lancaster, PA - run by an honest-to-goodness Amish family.. Somehow I think the atmosphere might be quite different..:goodvibes

I'm also in the "not for me" category after staying in a B&B for the first time this summer in Newport, RI. The bathroom was outside in the hall (although it was private for us only) and so we had to wear robes when we left the room to use it. Just felt weird like I might run into someone in the hall looking disheveled;) I didn't feel comfortable enough to use the "parlor" either, guess I just am not that outgoing... give me a good ole Hilton any day!

We once won a 2 night stay at a B&B (The Daniel Webster Inn) on the cape. It was more like a small hotel than someone's house. the room was great in that it had a jacuzzi tub for 2, canopy bed, working fireplace, etc.... It had a restaurant on the premises so you could eat dinner there as well, and a spa. It was a very romantic get away.

You just reminded me. We did stay at one place in NH that didn't have that private house feeling to it because it was quite large. I consider it an inn, not what I think of when I think bed and breakfast. Had a dining room with many small tables. Nice grounds & lots of activities. Quaint. Not stuffy at all -- but maybe it was because of the people we were with. Didn't have any interaction with owners other than checking in & out. http://www.dextersnh.com/index.html

It had rooms in the house, but also had outbuildings with additional rooms. We stayed in an outbuilding. We were there with a large group of relatives also for the weekend.

I enjoy them. The breakfast is usually super yummy, and the rooms are really nice. The ones I have stayed in have been large victorian type homes, with additional cottages and such. I have never stayed in the main houses, so I never felt like I was at grandma's house. I love the personal touches, and that the rooms have always been nice and big. Plus, who doesn't love a huge jacuzzi tub? Once in the mountains, I knew the breakfast was going to be more continental type, so I just let the owners know we were sleeping in every day of our stay so don't count us for breakfast. And that worked out fine. Ive also stayed in ones that have "theme" rooms and such.

B&Bs are not for me and DH. When we get away, we want to go to an impersonal luxury hotel. I don't want to be bothered or feel las though I'm bothering anyone else. We tried an inn in Ireland-basically a B&B but with more rooms and didn't like it a bit. It was owned by a husband and wife. He was as nice as can be and she was a shrew. I felt like I was in the middle of family tension.
